Continue ReadingWe’re nearing the tail end of this PrepRedzoneMN featured series focusing on bringing some exposure to the uncommitted and available 2021 series in the great state of Minnesota, and have so far covered the position groups of quarterbacks, tight ends, specialists, defensive line, and offensive line. With only a few positions left, we have moved onto the always exciting and ever-important wide receivers, and there is a TON of unsigned talent in the state, all of whom I hope get the proper chance to continue playing football at the next level. Seriously though, there are some big-time studs on this list, so let’s get into it. Below I’ve broken down each athlete’s film, recorded any recruiting interest they’ve reported, and added any additional information I could find. Thanks for reading!
Wide Receivers
Adam Tonsfeldt (Barnesville) MN Vikings All-State and AP All-State selection. Mr. Football Finalist. @Adam72517857
Has only reported an offer from Concordia-Moorhead. Had one of the best senior campaigns of any athlete in the state of MN in 2020 while competing on one of MN’s best small-school programs. Hudl film shows off some ridiculous highlights of an incredibly impressive quick and shifty ball-carrier in the open field in particular. I don’t want those adjectives to sound like an exaggeration either, as he possesses exceptional burst, speed, quickness, vision, and an understanding of how to manipulate opponents and completely juke them out of their cleats. He played QB for Barnesville but I think projects best as a WR/SB at the next level, and I am truly running out words to describe how fun Tonsfeldt is to watch run the football. He’s an exciting athlete with a high ceiling who definitely deserves more than a single offer, although props to the Cobbers for smartly reaching out officially. I really hope he chooses to play in college, and I really hope he’s received/is receiving the scholarship attention he deserves. Best of luck and very excited for your decision, Adam! Whenever I finally find the time to finalize the MN 2021 rankings he is going to be high up the list.
Riley Ashburn (Renville County West) @RileyAshburn15 – Committed to Bethany Lutheran College to play basketball as I was writing this piece.
Blake Walthall Blake Walthall 6'1" | WR Moorhead | 2021 State MN (Moorhead) 6’1, 165 lbs. @blakewalthall
Holds offers from MSU-Moorhead, Minot State, Concordia-Moorhead, St. John’s, Concordia-St. Paul, which I believe to be his finalists to play college football at. Has seen over 1500 receiving yards over his final two seasons in high school, and in 2020 posted 37 catches for 590 yards and 11 TDs while competing in one of the most potent passing attacks in the state of MN. His film shows a dangerous wideout after the catch who is strong enough to keep his balance through tackle attempts at his lower body and quick enough to juke a DB out of his cleats after he catches the ball. He runs good routes, is a great athlete with good concentration and an ability to make a flashy one-handed catch if necessary, and and the ability to turn a routine curl or hitch into a big play. Also shows great ball skills. Along with his twin brother, we are eagerly awaiting the Walthall’s upcoming college decision. Congrats on the great prep career, Blake!
Brady Walthall Brady Walthall 6'1" | WR Moorhead | 2021 State MN (Moorhead) 6’1, 170 lbs. AP All-State First Team. @BradyWalthall
Holds offers from MSU-Moorhead, Lake Region State (basketball), University of Jamestown, Dordt, Minot State, Morningside, Concorida-Moorhead, St. John’s. Also just finished his high school basketball career as only the 12th Spud ever to reach 1000 points, finishing with 1003. The speed jumps out first and foremost on film, and Walthall shows some strength to boot as more than a few defenders bounced off his pads in 2020 according to his tape. He’s very quick off the LOS, making his especially lethal in the redzone, and that lateral agility helps him become really shifty in the open field with some great jukes and cuts. Also made some splash plays a returner and showed he’s a tough wideout willing to make catches in traffic and/or over the middle. He’s been a matchup nightmare as an upperclassman for the Spuds and is hopefully going to make a college coaching staff very happy, very soon.
Jamarien Wheeler Jamarien Wheeler 6'2" | WR Minneapolis Washburn | 2021 State MN (MPLS Washburn) 6’2, 200 lbs. 2nd Team All-Metro. AP All-State Second Team. MN All-Star Game selection. @JamarienW
Holds offers from St. Thomas, Northern State. In 2020 recorded 23 catches for 730 yards and 14 TDs + 6 rushes for 215 yards and 3 TDs. With long strides and smooth hips plus some nice speed for a 200 lb. wideout, Wheeler was a big play machine over his final two years as a Washburn Miller. He was particularly dangerous running posts, as well as faking the post and running a fade, and there aren’t a lot of wideouts in MN over the past few years who I’ve seen run into the endzone so unopposed so often in their highlight tapes. I like his vision when the ball is in his hands, and he seems to get faster the longer he runs with the ball, gaining a hotter head of steam the more ground he covers. He’s also an efficient one-cutter, capable of accelerating out of the cuts and keeping his body in a position where he doesn’t let on to defenders where he is going or cutting to. I love watching him run with the football, and he seems to bring a balanced skill-set to the position with great size and speed as well. I’m surprised he hasn’t seen more interest to be honest, and I hope things are going ok in his recruitment process. I’m excited to see where he ends up.
Will Geary (Lakeville South) 6’ 185 lbs. GPA 3.6 @WillGeary3
Hasn’t reported any interest or offers. The younger brother of Golden Gophers wideout Clay, younger brother Will is a RB in the Lakeville South’s T-formation offense and popped off some big runs highlighting great vision and speed, particularly in the open field. He also retuned punts for the Cougars, and scored an impressive TD against Burnsville in 2020. When Lakeville South chose to throw the ball, he showed some big-play, deep threat ability that catches your eye as a RB as well. He brings a lot to like to the table as a prospect, is also a standout lacrosse player, and I really hope he chooses to continue his athletic career in college. His speed is really hard to ignore.
Bode Magnuson (Pequot Lakes) 5’10, 155 lbs. MN Vikings All-State Team. @BodeMags6
Hasn’t reported any interest or offers. Played QB and FS as a senior, but I think he projects as a wideout at the next level, hence his listing here. As a QB though, he has a ton of athleticism and brings some impressive lower-body strength and contact balance for a kid of his size, and was most dangerous when moving and manuvering outside of the pocket and trying to make a play when things break down. He was a tackle breaking machine and threw a good ball on the run, and his natural shiftiness and good feet and balance make me think the transition to wideout would come pretty easily to the Pequot Lakes product. I’m very intrigued to see where he ends up, and if I had to pick a random dark horse candidate to earn his commitment it’s hard not to think of the St. John’s Johnnies.
Eli Fest Eli Fest ATH Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda | 2021 State MN (Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda) 6’1, 180 lbs. @fest_eli
Invited to Concordia-Moorhead, Dakota Wesleyan, and SMSU junior days at the beginning of 2020. Also a standout basketball player who just finished an accomplished prep career. In his final season of high school football he played QB and DB and passed 62-105 for 882 yards and 7 TDs + 43 rushes for 264 yards and 4 TDs. With his basketball background, I think it’s a no-brainer that Fest’s ideal spot on a college football team would be at wideout. Senior tape displays a long and fluid athlete with excellent vision, cutting ability, and burst when he takes off and runs the ball. He’s a really natural athlete at the QB position who possesses a strong arm that I saw him use to complete a nice deep ball while on the run as the first play of his tape, as well as a crazy throwback where he ran to the left sideline (he’s a lefty), and then hucked the ball all the way over and across his body to the opposite hash for a crazy throwback type play. Where he really shines though is as a runner, as his size and fearlessness make him an exciting ball-carrier who can beat defenders with quickness and has the balance to run through tackle attempts as well. He looked really hard to corral in the pocket or on the run for opposing defenses, and I hope he takes his talents to the next level.
Hunter Berthiaume Hunter Berthiaume QB Wayzata | 2021 State MN (Wayzata) WR. 6’3, 180 lbs. @hrberthiaume
Hasn’t reported any interest or offers besides junior day invites. Senior season highlights shows a solid possession receiver willing to catch the ball with contact bearing down on him who also has some good burst off the LOS. With great length and a good use of his hands when bringing in the rock, he’s a good-looking wideout prospect who I think would be a great addition to a DIII program.
Aghogho Eyafe Aghogho Eyafe WR Andover | 2021 State MN (Andover) 5’11, 160 lbs. @AghoghoEyafe
Has been offered by Mayville State and Bemidji State. Has the speed and deep-threat ability to pop off a big play at any given time as a Huskie, and the toughness to run underneath routes out of the slot, giving him the options to possibly play a couple of receiver spots at the next level. He showed a good ability to run post-corners or corner-posts that display some solid looseness in his hips and also good one-cut ability. I like his game and I hope someone scoops up his talent.
Isaac Freitag (Bloomington Jefferson) 6’2, 180 lbs. @Ifreitag3
No reported interest or offers. Senior season he totaled 500+ all-purpose yards and 35 receptions in six games. Smooth slot receiver who is solid out of his cuts and has no problem going over the middle. He’s got long arms and uses his hands to bring the ball in, and with an impressive basketball background and great size, he’s got a lot of promising traits that a college WR room could take advantage of. Hit him up!
Dominick Livingston Dominick Livingston WR Mahtomedi | 2021 State MN (Mahtomedi) 5’8, 165 lbs. @Dlivingston02
No reported interest or offers. In four games in 2020 he totaled 9 receptions for 178 yards and 2 TD and on tape you can see he is dangerous at the LOS with quick feet that help him cut throughout his route as well. He’s a tough slot receiver who does a good job of not signaling where he is going before he cuts and can run a good variety of the route tree.
Jack Ward Jack Ward WR Rochester John Marshall | 2021 State MN (Rochester John Marshall) 5’9, 160 lbs. @j_ward33
Received junior day invites from Bemidji State and St. Olaf. Does not have updated senior tape.
Sadik Bouari Sadik Bouari ATH Burnsville | 2021 State MN (Burnsville) 5’11, 175 lbs. @BouariSadik
Has a track and field offer from the University of Jamestown and visited Concordia-St. Paul for track as well.
Cameron Latvis (Henry Sibley) 6’2, 190 lbs. All-District. GPA 4.0 – @camlat11
Holds offers from Carleton College, St. Olaf College, Grinnell College, Macalester College, Augsburg University, Hamline University, Dordt University, Concordia College-Moorhead, St. John’s University. That’s quite the impressive high academic offer list. Played a ton of different positions throughout his high school career and would also make an ideal safety/OLB at the next level. In 2020 he passed for 476 yards and a TD and rushed for 452 yards and 7 TDs and was a dangerous dual-threat QB for the Warriors who runs a beautiful read-option offense. He’s got a great frame with long legs that help him really cover ground in a jiffy as well as put a hurtin’ on would-be tacklers when he chooses to lower the shoulder. He’s also got great vision and a powerful lower body that really make him a menace in the open field. As I’m sure most of you know, I’m a big big MIAC guy, so I can’t even lie I hope he picks one of those opportunities. Overall though, I want him to do what’s best for him. Best of luck in the decision, Cameron!
Kristian Kaesviharn (Wayzata) 6’, 180 lbs. GPA 3.8 @KristianKaesvi1
Does not have updated senior highlights or any reported interest or offers.
Damian Meyer-Andre (Jackson County Central) 5’10, 165 lbs. @damian_meyer89
Visited Dakota State and UW-River Falls. Also was a standout WR at the January PrepRedzoneMN Showcase, Meyer-Andre is shifty as a route runner and his career highlights on Hudl display a wideout who can make the first man miss in space and runs an impressive fade route in opponents territory that helped him become best friends with the corner of the endzone throughout his high school campaign. I also love how tracks the ball when it’s in the air, and I hope some D3s and NAIAs check him out before the spring finishes up.
Brennen Wall (Anoka) 6’2, 200 lbs. @brennen_wall
Visited the College of St. Scholastica. Offered by Southwest MN State. Doesn’t have updated senior film, unfortunately.
Riley Gruenes Riley Gruenes 6'4" | WR Rosemount | 2021 State MN (Rosemount) 6’4, 200 lbs. @GruenesRiley
Offered by Mayville State and received a ton of graphics from Sioux Falls. Played QB as a senior for the Irish this past season and shows that he has the possibility to play it at the next level, but that size makes him really intriguing as a pass-catching prospect as well. He’s a strong ball carrier when he takes off and has a good lower body for running through weaker tackles. He also can get the ball out of his hand with some zip as well.
Dennis Holte Dennis Holte 6'2" | QB Minneapolis Roosevelt | 2021 State MN (MPLS Roosevelt) 6’2, 205 lbs. All-District HM @holte_dennis
Holds an offer from UW-River Falls. Helped lead a resurgent Roosevelt Teddies program back from the dead to competing hard and successfully in the Twin City Districts. At 6’2, 215 lbs. he brings intriguing size to the position and posted 18 receptions for 315 yards and 4 TDs and made big plays deep as well as over the middle in 2020. He’s got the natural frame and strength to run through weaker tackle attempts as well. I was very proud of Holte and his unsigned senior QB teammate August Butler for really putting in a lot of work to help turn that Teddies program around. My senior year of high school Roosevelt unfortunately, had to compete on an all JV level, so they’ve come a long way since then and I’m very happy to see it.
Josh Simon (Woodbury) 6’4, 175 lbs. @Josh_Simon717
Offered by Concordia College-Moorhead. Doesn’t have updated film.
Marquise Gleb (South St. Paul) ATH. @GlebMarquise
Was recently named All-Conference in his senior basketball season after averaging 12.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg, and 4.3 apg. Senior highlights display a long and athletic wideout who has a great get-off at the LOS. He’s also a physical and willing blocker, which I really liked to see, and is dangerous with the ball in his hands and strong enough to get himself through weaker tackle attempts. I like the size and physicality he brings to the position.
Elwood Jangaba III (Roseville) 6’, 150 lbs. @saucywoody916
Offered by Crown College and University of Jamestown. Doesn’t have updated senior film that I could find.
Jaxon Opitz (Henry Sibley) 5’10, 160 lbs. @JAXONOPITZ88
Offered by Luther College and Hamline University. Tough and laterally quick slot receiver with no problem making tough catches, taking a hit, or going over the middle.
Jonah Christensen (Breckenridge) @JonahChristens6
Hasn’t reported any interest or offers. Also a standout basketball player who sadly doesn’t have much football film.
Hunter Klatt (Becker) WR/S. 6’, 200 lbs. @Hunter_klatt12
Hasn’t reported any interest or offers. Great size coming from an accomplished and tough program in the Becker Bulldogs, Klatt’s senior tape shows off a strong wideout who keeps his feet pumping when breaking down his routes and uses his hands well to bring the ball into his chest. He took a really hard hit from a safety against Hutchinson running a slant where he bounced off and sent the safety flying in an impressive display of strength. He’s a really solid-looking possession receiver.
AJ Reeves (Hopkins) 5’8, 170 lbs. @Ajreeves20
Visited William Penn and holds an offer from them as well. Also a competitive wrestler for the Royals. Senior tape shows a slot receiver who is elusive in the open field and also possesses the top-end speed to take the top off the defense.
Ibukun Taiwo (Alexandria) 5’9, 170 lbs. @ibukuntaiwo8 GPA 3.89
Offered by McPherson College, Hastings College, Carthage College, Gustavus Adolphus College. Senior season tape shows a versatile athlete capable of playing either WR or DB at the next who gets off the line fast and can high point the football and display some good body control. I like how dynamic and tough he is to boot.
Jackson Klocow (Lakeview) 5’10, 160 lbs. @jackson_klocow
No reported interest or offers. Senior highlights show a speedy athlete capable of hurting defenses on deep routes downfield or on jet sweeps and counters in between or outside the tackles. He’s got some really solid speed and can be tough for defenses to corral if he gets the edge.
Jace Bigelow (Kasson-Mantorville) 6’4, 190 lbs. @jace_bigelow
Holds an offer from William Penn. Also a standout basketball player for the Komets. Senior football tape shows some really impressive vertical game, as Bigelow completely mossed a couple of DBs in 2020 and has the speed and ball-tracking ability to continue making plays at the next level. Also showed some impressive skills as a CB.
David Boyd Jr David Boyd Jr 6'5" | 185 lbs | WR Apollo | 2021 State MN . (St. Cloud Apollo) 6’5, 185 lbs. @dboydjr2
Hasn’t reported any college interest or offers. Senior season highlights in 2020 display a great-sized WR prospect who is long, strong, and has a high ceiling as a potential collegiate wideout. He made some plays on shorter hitches or curls where he had to make tough catches through contact and see the ball all the way into his hands.
Max Stepanek (Blaine) 6’2, 200 lbs. @maxstepanek1
Hasn’t reported any interest or offers. While watching his senior tape it’s easy to see he’s a big-bodied, strong, and physical wideout who can make a big play if needed and will block his butt from the WR or HB position. He made a big play off of a simple slant to open his highlight tape that encompasses his game pretty well. I hope someone scoops him up!
Seth Bakken (Shakopee) @BakkenSeth
No reported interest or offers. In 8 games totaled 36 rushes for 405 yards (11.25 YPC) and 6 rushing TDs. Also caught four balls for 48 yards and a reception TD, and took a kickoff to the house as well.
Dylan Muyres (Blaine) 6’3, 200 lbs. GPA 3.8 @Dylan65143657
Hasn’t reported any interest or offers. Career highlight tape over three seasons with the Bengals shows a complete WR who works back to the ball well and is a willing and able blocker. I like his deep play ability as well, as he showed some good consistency at being able to get open on fades and posts. Blaine was loaded with senior talent this season, and I hope the talents of Muyres don’t fall under the radar.
