There are unknown athletes across the state who are on the verge of breaking out on the recruiting scene, and many of them are in the 2023 class.
Here are a few 2023 athletes who should see their stock rise during spring practice next month…
Martel Hight – Rome
There’s a lot of buzz around this two-way player from Rome and he could be the next breakout prospect in the Northwest Georgia region. The 6-foot-1 170-pounder excels as both a receiver and a defensive back, which says a lot to be able to pull that off at a historic program like Rome. One staff member there told Prep Zone recently that both Florida and Vanderbilt could be close to pulling the trigger on an offer. He’s a smooth athlete with good ball skills and athleticism that allows him to play the ball well. He breaks on the ball well and plays everything that is thrown in the air. The Rome staff expects him to be a shut-down corner this upcoming season while also being featured heavily as a wide receiver on offense. As a sophomore last year, Height caught 30 passes for 386 yards and 3 touchdowns. On defense, Hight intercepted five passes and broke up seven more. He’s long, rangy, and has a nice frame that will allow him to play at a high level in college. Once he gets his first offer, expect the floodgates to open.
Jamal Bing – Dutchtown
IF you’re looking for a breakout running back in Middle Georgia, Bing might be your guy. The Hampton native isn’t the biggest back at 5-foot-9 and 178-pounds, but he’s quick, shifty, and has breakaway speed. He’s tough to hit at a direct angle and slips through tackles with ease. His quick feet allow him to change directions quickly and once he gets into the open field, he’s always a threat to score. He might be a little small this second, but as a 2023 prospect, he still has plenty of time to grow and add on muscle to his frame. On defense, Bing is a physical hitter from his cornerback spot and is reliable in coverage on the outside. He’s not one to shy away from contact and that is a coaches dream. The two-way star is one of the team’s best players and he’ll be relied on heavily on both sides of the ball this fall as a junior. He holds on offer from the in-state Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, but he could see more coming his way later this spring and into the summer.
Jaylen Johnson – Appling County
In southeast Georgia is where you’ll find one of the top under the radar athletes in the entire state. The 5-foot-10 190-pound RB/CB is coming off a big sophomore season where he helped lead Appling County to a 9-2 record and a deep run in the playoffs. On offense, Johnson was 2nd on the team in rushing last year with 591 yards on 61 carries and three touchdowns. He also caught 5 passes for 168 yards (33.6 ypc) and two touchdowns. On defense, Johnson showed he’s solid in coverage in the back end due to his overall speed and athleticism. He’s one of the toughest and better athletes in the area and is expected to make a big impact on both sides of the ball again as a junior as Appling County looks to make a state championship run in 3A.
