Now, it’s time to look at some of the offensive players in the 2022 class that have put up great performances so far in the spring. These guys have played well enough to prove they could play college football at a level higher than it was originally believed before the season.
Wesley Grimes Wesley Grimes 6'3" | 180 lbs | WR Millbrook | 2022 State NC , WR, 6’3 180- Millbrook
I make mistakes sometimes. I accidentally left Grimes off of our 2022 preseason rankings, not because I hadn’t heard of him, but more because I quite literally forgot to put him on the list. We’ll fix this oversight in our next rankings update, where Grimes will likely be ranked as one of the top receivers in the state. He’s torched every team he’s played this year with a rare combination of size, speed and route running ability.
Highlights from the season’s first three games
Cedavion Wimbley Cedavion Wimbley 6'0" | 160 lbs | ATH South View | 2022 State NC , Ath., 6’ 165- South View
Wimbley is absolutely electric with the ball in his hands, fitting the mold of an athlete that can throw rather than a true dropback passer. That being said, he takes care of the ball and has been a homerun threat through the air and on the ground. He’s run for at least 60 yards in five of six games and has a passer rating of 129.2 in his last four games, averaging 14.5 yards per attempt in that span. His vision as a ball carrier and positive decision-making make him a huge asset for South View.
Highlights from a 5-touchdown performance against Overhills
Tate Carney Tate Carney 5'11" | 200 lbs | RB Davie | 2022 State NC , RB, 5’11 200- Davie
Carney has put up 1494 all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns this season… in six games. He’s been nothing short of unbelievable this year, including an RJ Reynolds performance in which he put up 368 scrimmage yards and a state-record-tying 8-touchdown performance. Carney is a tough runner, nearly impossible to bring down one-on-one, and has been the definition of a workhorse this season, averaging over 31 carries a game.
Highlights from his record-breaking game against RJ Reynolds
Jesiah Henderson Jesiah Henderson 6'5" | 295 lbs | OL Rolesville | 2022 State NC , OT, 6’5 295- Rolesville
Rolesville has a trio of talented 2022 offensive players that could have landed on this list but I’m choosing to highlight Henderson. Henderson has been one of the most consistent offensive linemen in the state this season, allowing guys like Byrum Brown Byrum Brown 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Rolesville | 2022 State NC and Noah Rogers Noah Rogers 6'3" | 185 lbs | WR Rolesville | 2023 State NC ] to put up big numbers. Henderson is an imposing figure with great size and displays his power on a regular basis. Anyone that had doubts about Henderson being an FBS prospect should have those put to rest after the regular season Henderson just had.
