Continue ReadingAs we continue our Stock Up series, we take a look at the 2023 quarterbacks poised for rankings bumps after solid sophomore campaigns. I’ve been high on the 2023 quarterback class in the past, especially in the past, and as a testament to that, none of these guys were previously in my top five, but put up huge numbers as sophomores and it’s far past time they receive some recognition.
Andrew Frazier Andrew Frazier 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Havelock | 2023 State NC , 5’11 185- Havelock
I’ll give myself a little bit of credit here (Don’t worry, I’ll make fun of myself in a bit) in that we’ve been on Frazier for a while and have known of his talent. I thought he’d have a solid year. But I’m not sure I expected a 74-percent completion, 20-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio type of year. Frazier was the most efficient sophomore quarterback, but his raw numbers looked great too, as he averaged over 11 yards an attempt. He throws a tight spiral and has a quick throwing motion that gets the ball out in a hurry. He excels on touch passes into tight windows.
Connor Clark Connor Clark 6'5" | 225 lbs | QB Cardinal Gibbons | 2023 NC , 6’6 210- Cardinal Gibbons
Here’s where I’ll get on myself. I just whiffed on Clark in the offseason, leaving him off our first 2023 rankings list. I was quickly notified of my mistake and started watching. Boy, I’m glad I did. The lefty signal-caller has a cannon and isn’t afraid to let it fly. He stayed accurate throughout the year too, completing 63 percent of his passes and putting up a 13-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio over the course of the season. He only attempted 90 passes, but averaged over 10 yards an attempt and had a touchdown rate over 14 percent.
Tyler Mizzell Tyler Mizzell 6'1" | 160 lbs | QB East Lincoln | 2023 State NC , 6’ 160- East Lincoln
In our preseason rankings, we had Mizzell as the 10th-best quarterback in the 2023 class, citing concerns about his size. Mizzell put up the third-best touchdown-to-interception ratio in the state at 15-to-1 and averaged 63 percent of his passes while leading East Lincoln to a 5-2 record. The ball jumps out of Mizzell’s hand and gets to his receivers in a hurry. He also displays nice touch on deep balls and maintains his accuracy on the run. He’s due for a rankings bump after the season.
Justin Rocquemore Justin Rocquemore 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Stuart Cramer | 2023 State NC , 5’11 180- Stuart Cramer
It was a rough year for Stuart Cramer, but Rocquemore was a bright spot, leading all sophomores in passing yards by a wide margin and finishing fourth among sophomore signal callers in rushing yards. He averaged over 300 total yards a game and kept Stuart Cramer in a lot of games. Rocquemore is patient in the pocket and doesn’t usually run unless he has to, preferring to scan the field and find an open receiver. He has plenty of time to continue developing his arm and we’re excited to see what he does in the future.
Amari Odom Amari Odom 6'4" | 175 lbs | QB Panther Creek | 2023 NC , 6’3 175- Panther Creek
A 2-sport athlete, Odom put up big numbers down as a sophomore, especially down the stretch. He threw for 20 touchdowns while helping lead Panther Creek to an undefeated regular season. He has great pocket movement and excelled at making big, off-schedule throws. He’s not a runner, but uses his speed to get outside the pocket if it breaks down and keeps his eyes downfield, always looking for an open receiver. He only threw six interceptions all season and generally takes care of the ball, while still making his fair share of highlight plays.
