Using a five-part series, we looked at four from each classification who we’ve found can be counted on whether their team is looking to move the football or stop an opponent from doing just that. The next installment evaluates Class 3A, where the two-way standouts start to play an even bigger role for their teams.
Tim McClurkin, WR/DB, Chapman
One of the big three receives for Chapman hauled in 381 yards and three scores last fall on 37 receptions. He’s got straight-line speed, but also the ability to cut the seem diagonally. Defensively, the 5-foot-11, 175 pounds was nearly as effective, putting up 17 tackles, breaking up seven passes and picking off two more.
Garrison Gasque, QB/S, Aynor
Anyone who has watched the Blue Jackets’ offense that last several years under offensive coordinator-turned-head coach Jason Allen knows the quarterback is basically just a hard-nosed fullback by another name. This year, that spot goes to Gasque full time. He ran for 503 yards and three touchdowns last year, so it’s no surprise he’s a hard-hitting safety, too.
Zayveon Wells Zayveon Wells 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Lakewood | 2022 State SC , DB/WR, Lakewood
Even if Wells is only moonlighting as a receiver, his junior season was proof positive that he’s taking everything from his defensive back position and making it count when he’s lining up on offense. Wells runs crisp routes, almost always catches the ball with his hands and cuts around opposing defenders as if he knows where they’re going to be. Meanwhile, he led the team in PBUs.
Jailen Tribble Jailen Tribble 6'1" | 180 lbs | DB Woodruff | 2022 State SC , DB/WR, Woodruff (pictured)
Tribble (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) is already a top-60 player in the class as a defensive back. It makes sense, as he led the Wolverines in picks last year. He also got 25 targets at receiver, a figure that is sure to increase during his third year as a starter for coach Bradley Adams’ team.
