Located just northwest of Fulton County, Cherokee County is a fast-growing part of north Georgia that’s producing more and more D1 talent each year. From Woodstock to Canton and all in-between, Cherokee County proved last season that the teams that play there can play with just about anyone in the state, and they have some of the best running backs in all of Georgia returning for the 2021 season.
Here are a few standout running backs from Cherokee County to know about this fall…
Amehre Morrison Amehre Morrison 5'8" | 165 lbs | RB River Ridge | 2022 State GA – River Ridge
It might sound crazy, but as the state’s leading rusher from last season, Morrison still might be the most underrated running back in the entire state. He may not be the biggest guy at 5-foot-8 and 165-pounds, but Morrison was the most productive back across the state last year as a junior. He torched defenses all season with his speed, vision, and ability to break tackles as he rushed for 1,958 total yards and 29 touchdowns. His size is the only reason why he doesn’t have a long offer sheet because his play last year was outstanding. Morrison rushed for over 163 yards per game and was a threat to score every time he touched the ball. He was tough to bring down and was able to elude bigger defenders with ease. He knows how to accelerate in the open field and makes it tough for anyone to get a good grip on him down the field. He’s a great open-field runner and also helped in the passing game, catching 24 passes for 260 yards. If he continues to get the carries that he did last year, Morrison has a great chance to lead the state in rushing for a second consecutive season.
Keith Adams Jr. – Cherokee
Another new star that emerged from Canton last year was Cherokee’s Keith Adams Jr. An unknown prospect coming into the season, Adams Jr. started the season off with a bang as he rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener. Adams Jr. only got better as the season went on and finished with an impressive 1,350 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was a tackle-breaking machine all season due to his 5-foot-10 200-pound frame. He’s thick, strong, and has better speed that defenses realized. Once he got through the line of scrimmage and built up some speed, the Cherokee star was headed for the end-zone. He showed good vision, he changes direction well, and he was big and strong enough to carry the running game all season. The Warriors had one of their best seasons in school history last year, and they can thank Adams Jr. for that. Paired up once again with three-star QB AJ Swann, Adams Jr. and the Cherokee offense will have high expectations heading into the 2021 season this fall.
Tyler Stevens Tyler Stevens 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB Creekview | 2022 GA – Creekview
It was a successful year for the Creekview Grizzlies last year as they went 7-3 and made it to the 7A playoffs. One reason they made it that far was because of the play of junior running back Tyler Stevens Tyler Stevens 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB Creekview | 2022 GA . One of the top playmakers in the city of Canton, the multi-year starter has been an impact player for the Grizzlies since he was a freshman and had his best year last fall as he rushed the ball 192 times for 886 yards and 9 touchdowns. He didn’t have a ton of yards per carry, but he got tough yards and kept the chains moving on a consistent basis. He put the Creekview offense on his back against Chattahoochee late in the season when he rushed for 222 yards and a score. He also caught the game-tying touchdowns against rival Etowah, where Creekview would go on to win the game. Stevens also made an impact in the passing game, catching 28 passes for 256 yards and two more scores. Expect him to have another big season as a senior in 2021.
