That’s about it.
This area of the state lives and bleeds high school football and they want to keep it that way. Every game is a family event. The mood of everyone all weekend is determined by whether the community’s high school football team won on Friday night. It’s a great place to find football talent, but each year there are impressive athletes who just get overlooked. IT happens way too often, so here are a few South Georgia playmakers that you might not know about who could have breakout seasons this fall.
Bryce Davis – Vidalia
The small town of Vidalia is known for onions, but it 2021 it could be known as the home of Bryce Davis. One of the top athletes in Southeast Georgia, Davis was a true dual-threat weapon for the Indians last year but did most of his damage on the ground. He’s athletic enough to make plays on both sides of the ball due to his speed and chance of direction, and that’s why he was able to run all over most defenses he played against last year. He’s a natural runner with great vision and burst when he has the ball. He played QB last year, so he did throw for close to 1,000 yards and 8 TDs, but he was dangerous as a runner all season. He showed good speed, balance, and a true nose for the end-zone. As a junior last season, Davis rushed 132 times for 1,277 yards and 13 touchdowns. He rushed for over 100 yards in six games and led the Indians to a 7-3 record and a region championship.
Ree Simmons – Brunswick
The multi-sport star is a true “under the radar” prospect in South Georgia after his impressive junior season. Simmons was a good runner for the Pirates last year and was able to run behind one of the biggest offensive lines in all of Georgia. At 5-foot-10 180-pounds, Simmons is one of the more athletic running backs in the region and made his presence known early and often last year. Simmons totaled 1,176 yards last season and was able to find the end-zone 10 times. He tallies just under 100 yards per game and crossed the 100-yard mark six times during the season. Simmons’ best game of the season came against Northeast where he rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns. The week prior, Simmons rushed for a whopping 195 yards. He showed quick feet, good vision, and was able to put the offense on his back when he needed too. He was a big-play waiting to happen and should keep defenses worried once again in his final season this fall.
Maurice Turner – Coffee
Looking for a true playmaker who can make plays wherever he’s lined up? Well, Maurice Turner is your guy. The 5-foot-10 175-pounder can line up at receiver, in the slot, or carry the load at running back. Either way, he’s going to make some plays. He’s got speed, ball skills, versatility, and big-play ability. At running back, Turner rushed for 600 yards and found the end-zone 9 times. As a receiver, Turner caught 40 passes for close to 700 yards and 5 more touchdowns. He’s a good playmaker and showed the ability to make people miss and get up-field for yards after the catch. There aren’t many across the state who are as versatile as Turner, and he’ll be one of the top returning playmakers in all of South Georgia later this year. He’s expected to have an even bigger role as a senior, so his stats should only increase in his final season.
