That’s a lot easier said than done, but numerous guys across the state proved to be very versatile athletes and make plays wherever they were asked to line up. The more plays you can make from different positions, the more opportunities you will get. Take a look at 5 versatile players from the spring 2021 season:
Tanner Volk Tanner Volk 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Aloha | 2021 State OR , ATH, 6’1″ 185lbs, Aloha HS ’21
Volk was potentially the most versatile player in the state, as he can excel at any position he is asked to play. He accumulated 1,386 total yards on the season. This included 743 yards passing, 339 rushing, and 304 yards receiving with around 14 TD’s. He also contributed on defense with 45 tackles and 3 INT’s, handled the kicking and punting duties, and returned punts as well. He reads defenses well and gets the ball out quick as a passer. He’s a big play threat with the ball in his hands and possesses solid speed all around. He is a clean route runner who frequently generates separation and tracks the ball well. Just an impressive athlete all around, and he will be fun to watch at Central Washington University.
Malik Ross Malik Ross 6'0" | 190 lbs | ATH Tualatin | 2022 State OR , ATH, 6’0″ 190lbs, Tualatin HS ’22
Ross is a very good all around athlete and a two-sport standout for Tualatin, as he is also an extremely talented basketball player. He can line up at RB, WR, DB, and serve as a return specialist as well and pose as a big play threat from all positions. He shows an excellent change of direction and vision as a ball carrier, with solid top end speed to finish big runs. He has good balance after contact to keep the feet moving and stay up, often springing him loose. He reads the QB’s eyes well as a DB and plays the ball well in the back half of the field. Solid play recognition as well and is a flat out fun athlete to watch.
Kristian Fralich Kristian Fralich 5'9" | 175 lbs | WR Cascade Christian | 2021 State OR , ATH, 5’9″ 160lbs, Cascade Christian ’21
Fralich was able to rack up 725 total yards and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He rushed for 487 yards while adding another 238 yards receiving with 11 total TD’s. He is a threat on the defensive side of the ball as well, accumulating 29 tackles and 1 INT as a DB. He’s shown the ability to be a dangerous return specialist as well. He’s an explosive receiver with good twitch, and shows the ability to make opponents miss in space. Fralich is a fluid route runner with good top end speed and soft hands. He shows a good change of direction to break on the ball as a DB. Definitely a very dynamic player all around and remains uncommitted.
Imarion Kelly, ATH, 6’2″ 190lbs, Roosevelt HS ’22
Kelly is another dynamic athlete that can excel from anywhere on the field. He threw for 836 yards, rushed for 232 yards, and had 66 yards receiving in just 4 games. He can line up at QB, RB, WR, DB, or return kicks and punts and pose as a threat anywhere. At QB, he does a good job getting the ball out quick and has shown solid flashes of good ball placement. He is a legit dual-threat type, and shows solid vision with very good fast twitch and excellent all around speed for big play ability. He is shifty and jittery in open space without decelerating. As a DB, he’s displayed good hip flexibility with the ability to burst out of of breaks and break on the ball quick. Excellent short area quickness all around, and has drawn some FBS level interest.
Noah Niblett, WR/DB, 5’11″ 180lbs, Marshfield HS ’21
Niblett was a standout on both sides of the ball for Marshfield and is a very underrated player. He racked up 94 yards passing with a TD, 138 yards rushing with a TD, and 38 receptions for 562 yards and 4 TD’s, giving him a 824 yard season. He also raked up 40 tackles and 2 NT’s on defense. They ran a lot of 3 receiver sets (trips rt/lt) at Marshfield where Niblett did a great job in the slot. He also showed the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He isn’t a huge burner in terms of speed, but shows a nice burst at the top of routes to generate separation. He was a solid all around player for Marshfield and a tough kid.
