On March 7th, Coach O and the 806 High School Sports Connection hosted a skills showcase in Lubbock for athletes in the West Texas area. Lubbock was well represented, with Estacado, Coronado, Monterey, Frenship, and Cooper all having students attend, joined by players from Amarillo, San Angelo, Childress, and McCamey.
Offensive Line
OL MVP – Karson Jones – Frenship 2022 – 6’5 285lbs
Jones put on a clinic at this camp, taking home the Offensive Line MVP honors. His wide shoulders, solid build, and long arms allowed him to keep pass rushers locked down most of the day. He took reps at both tackle and guard, displaying solid footwork and hand usage also. Karson has a lot of pop in his hands when he shoots them into the chest of a defender, and employs a really good push/pull technique allowing him to rip his assignment to the ground where he likes to finish by pancaking them in the turf. With only 2 offers currently, Jones is a player that will draw quite a bit of interest this year.
Tanyon Zachary – Lubbock Cooper 2022 – 6’4 270lbs
Zachary was listed at 270lbs for his school, but he appears to have slimmed down quite a bit and packed on some dense muscle. He plays with a great base and good pop in his hands on initial contact. Tanyon is also able to work in space due to his good mobility and has a nasty streak to finish off plays. This tackle prospect was first-team all-district in his junior season, and definitely someone to keep an eye on in 2021.
Holton Hendrix – Lubbock Cooper 2024 – 6’4 230lbs
Hendrix is a tall, lean tackle, with plenty of room on his frame to pack on some additional muscle over the next 3 years. As a freshman on varsity, he was able to hold his ground and work a bunch of his battles into stalemates. He has good footwork and mobility and shows a lot of promise for the future.
Running Backs
RB MVP – Antonio Malone – Coronado 2022 – 5’7 162lbs
This impressive running back is going to be a handful in 2021. Malone has a shorter, stocky build, but he was one of the most explosive, electric, and shifty athletes at this camp. He has really good footwork, is a smooth athlete, and great route runner, and a natural pass catcher. His burst and ball skills make him a dangerous threat of wheel routes out of the backfield, and his determined running style allows him to drive the pile between the tackles. Antonio is going to have teams that run a spread concept drooling over his skills this fall.
Karomo Collins – Plainview 2023 – 5’6 168lbs
Collins burst onto the scene in 2020, winning the starting job as a sophomore on varsity. He is patient to let blocks set up, and has good vision that allows him to find the holes. His best traits by far though, are his speed and agility that allow him to leave everyone in the dust once he finds open space. This jitterbug has the juice to take any carry he gets to the house from any distance.
Soul Moore – Tahoka 2021 – 5’11 175lbs
Soul is a thicker running back, listed at 175lbs, but might be closer to 190-200, with a strong lower half. His size and pad level allow him to drive piles, but it’s his soft hands as a receiver that really stood out at this camp. Moore also has value at the next level as a special teams player, and also displayed strong tackling ability as a safety.
