So as a scout focusing on Kansas athletes, I took advantage of the situation and scouted the Coffeyville at Highland contest on April 18.
Highland is a young squad under new head coach Jeff Hancock. The Scotties only have 20 sophomores on their roster but have 13 freshmen from Kansas High Schools. Highland fell 30-0 to Coffeyville to fall to 1-2 on the season.
Here is a look at three freshmen players from Highland with hopes of playing for four-year programs down the road.
OL, Preston Boyd, 6’5”, 290, (Abilene) – Boy is an impressive right tackle. He played his high school ball at Abilene and starts for Highland as a true freshman. He has nice lateral movement and plays with a mean streak. The strong and agile tackle could top out as a Division II prospect but will have a chance to improve his stock over the course of the rest of the spring season and during games next fall.
OL, Lucas Dankenbring 6’2”, 285, (Marysville) – Dankenbring is the starting center for the Scotties as true freshman. He is a solid snapper as Highland mostly plays with the quarterback in a short shotgun set. Dankenbring is a good blocker and plays poised as a freshman. He can lead an offensive front at this level and the next.
WR, Brandon Schroedl, 5’11”, 180, (Marysville) – Schroedl is a slot receiver who served as a captain in just his third game at Highland. He made one catch for nine yards in the loss to Coffeyville. He is a smooth route runner and contributed on special teams. He looks like e could have a future playing for a four-year program. He is a possession receiver who can help move the sticks. The former Marysville Bulldog is a true freshman.
