Continue ReadingI’ve seen a lot of quality football players this spring and was excited to see Prep Redzone’s updated class of 2022 rankings.
The rankings were released this week and here are my thoughts on the players in the San Diego Section on the list, and maybe some guys who are underrated who could be on the list.
- Jalil Tucker Jalil Tucker 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Lincoln | 2022 State CA from Lincoln is the highest-ranked player from San Diego in the rankings and it’s easy to understand why. He has elite speed with a 10.78 100m as a freshman. He became a national recruit last offseason and has offers from a lot of the major schools. Greg Biggins of 247Sports is predicting that Tucker will land at Oregon.
- Gracen Halton Gracen Halton 6'4" | 270 lbs | DL St. Augustine | 2022 State CA of St. Augustine could easily have been the top player from San Diego on the list. He’s an elite defensive end who moves incredibly well for a 270 pound guy. He has the power of a lineman and the speed of a linebacker who can stop the outside run game. Halton is committed to Oregon.
- Cathedral Catholic defensive lineman Jaxson Moi Jaxson Moi 6'2" | 250 lbs | DL Cathedral Catholic | 2022 State CA had his stock rise faster than anyone in San Diego this spring. He has 21 offers, 13 of which have come in the year 2021. He played all over the defensive front for the Dons this season in their three-man front. I imagine college scouts see him as a possible three-technique defensive lineman at the next level.
- Another Lincoln star Jahlil Florence Jahlil Florence 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Lincoln - San Diego | 2022 State CA makes his debut in the updated rankings. He is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and got an offer from Jackson State last week. He visited Washington recently for the Huskies’ spring game and is approaching 20 offers.
- Zach Rowell Zach Rowell 6'5" | 265 lbs | DL Torry Pines | 2022 State CA is new on this list but was a huge oversight on the first edition of the rankings that came out last summer. He is the best player on a very good Torrey Pines team and has seen his stock rise rapidly. He is a big defensive end at 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds. Rowell has 11 offers including Michigan, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and USC. Some recruiting analysts expect him to commit to Oregon soon.
- Jackson Stratton Jackson Stratton 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB La Jolla | 2022 State CA is new to the rankings and is the highest ranked quarterback in the San Diego region, No. 7 overall for the class. Stratton completed 70 percent of his passes and threw 19 touchdowns compared to just two interceptions. He is committed to Washington.
- Mt. Carmel’s Jayden Virgin Jayden Virgin 6'3" | 220 lbs | TE Mt. Carmel | 2022 State CA made a name for himself at showcases this winter and had a great spring season for the Sundevils. He caught 22 passes for 468 yards and five touchdowns in just six games. Virgin has no offers yet but has been in contact with Fresno State and San Diego State.
- Rex Haynes Rex Haynes 6'4" | 200 lbs | WR Cathedral Catholic | 2022 State CA and Lucky Sutton Lucky Sutton 6'1" | 205 lbs | RB Cathedral Catholic | 2022 State CA are two of the top offensive skill players for Cathedral Catholic. Sutton is new to the list but had a breakout spring with 721 yards and six touchdowns in just four games for the Dons. Haynes is one of the best receivers in the region and has offers from Arizona State, Colorado State and San Diego State. Sutton has five offers, four of which are from Mountain West schools.
- Christian Washington Christian Washington 5'11" | 200 lbs | RB Helix | 2022 State CA is ranked No. 124 and is the first player from Helix which is highly unusual. Helix had a depleted roster due to having many seniors who opted out to enroll in college early or just prepare for their freshman seasons. Washington rushed for 702 yards and four touchdowns for the Highlanders this spring but still has no offers.
- Eastlake had an incredible spring season en route to a Metro-Mesa league championship. Treyton White Treyton White 6'1" | 230 lbs | LB Eastlake | 2022 State CA was outstanding at outside linebacker with 18 tackles and five sacks in just three games according to MaxPreps. He has offers from Arizona, Columbia and Penn.
- Justin Stearns Justin Stearns 6'3" | 200 lbs | LB St. Augustine | 2022 State CA of St. Augustine and Harmon Savaiinaea Harmon Savaiinaea 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Cathedral Catholic | 2022 State CA are two of the top linebackers in San Diego and are new to the rankings. Stearns has offers from New Mexico and Utah State. Savaiinaea has offers from Colorado, Colorado State and Hawaii.
- Cathedral Catholic was the best team in San Diego this spring and its quarterback Charlie Mirer Charlie Mirer 6'6" | 225 lbs | QB Cathedral Catholic | 2022 State CA got some well-deserved press. He is the son of former NFL quarterback Rick Mirer. The Dons do not ask him to do much so his numbers weren’t gaudy, but he is lengthy and has a big arm.
- Two good offensive line prospects made the list: Luke Bolin Luke Bolin 6'4" | 270 lbs | OL St. Augustine | 2022 State CA of St. Augustine and Jonah Zimmerman Jonah Zimmerman 6'3" | 290 lbs | OL Oceanside | 2022 State CA of Oceanside. Bolin is a tall interior lineman at 6-foot-4 and has room to put on size at 270 pounds without losing his athleticism as a puller. He has an offer from Maryland. Zimmerman is a little bigger at 290 pounds and is also a guard with offers from Air Force and Army.
Here is the list of San Diego schools with the most scholarship offers as of this week:
Cathedral Catholic 7
Lincoln 5
Mater Dei Catholic 5
St. Augustine 5
