The term “GOAT” gets thrown around all the time and we decided to join the party. While we’re not saying any current Oklahoma high school football players are the greatest of all time, we do have some pretty special ones playing right now. So we’ve done some research and will shine a light on several prospects over the next two months with these prospect spotlights. We’ll compare them to some of the very best at their position. And since the majority of our research is done on the internet, we’ll keep it somewhat current and only go back 20-25 years when comparing today’s players to some of the best who have played high school ball. Today’s prospect is Edmond Santa Fe 2022 wide receiver and Oklahoma commit Talyn Shettron Talyn Shettron 6'3" | WR Edmond Santa Fe | 2022 State OK . And here’s the verdict.
Shettron Is The Best Wide Receiver That Oklahoma Has Produced Since Robert Meachem.
Yes, it’s high praise for a kid who still hasn’t played his senior season. For those not familiar with the accolades of former Booker T Washington phenom Robert Meachem, here’s the quick breakdown. He was a two-sport star for the Hornets. He was an All American on the football field and a state champion on the basketball court. Meachem was without a doubt one of the best prospects in not only Oklahoma but in the country. According to Rivals, Meachem was the top Oklahoma prospect in the 2003 class. He was the third best wide receiver and the 20th overall prospect in the country. Meachem was recruited by programs all over the country and eventually signed with Tennessee.
At Tennessee, Meachem was a first team All American wide receiver during the 2006 season. After that, he would forgo his senior season and would take his talents from there to the NFL. He was the 27th overall pick in the first round to the New Orleans Saints. The Tulsa product spent eight seasons in the NFL and finished his career with nearly 3,000 yards receiving and 27 touchdowns. He also was a member of the 2009 Saints that won the super bowl.

Look, we’re not writing this suggesting that Shettron is going to be an All American at the next level and an eventual first round draft pick. But it’s really not that crazy of a thought. Shettron has been a phenom in Oklahoma since his sophomore season. Looking back, I now consider myself lucky that I was on the sideline for the game in which it was very clear that he was one of the best overall players in the state, regardless of class.
That game was week nine of his sophomore season as Edmond Santa Fe traveled to Jenks. Shettron finished with nine catches for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns. On the road against Jenks. And this wasn’t a Jenks team that was bumbling through the season. They had some studs on defense and it did not matter. The following week, Shettron and the Wolves locked up the district championship after a season where they beat both Jenks and defending state champ Broken Arrow on the road.
After that, it was clear to anyone who saw this kid that he was the real deal and the next big thing at the position. There have been some outstanding wide receivers to come out of Oklahoma in the last two decades. Wes Welker, Jameel Owens, Justin Blackmon, Tyler Lockett and Sterling Shepard just to name a few. However, when it comes to Shettron and Meachem, the combination of on field success and physical stature make them the perfect match. You can make the argument that a guy like Welker or Lockett had way better pro careers than Meachem. Or that Blackmon was one of the best to ever do it in college. But Meachem did it at all three levels. Shettron has the chance to do the same.
