More often than not, they find the back they’re looking for. The state once again is loaded with running back talent, and there are quite a few in the 2022 class who are seeing their stock rise more and more each day.
Here are a few 2022 backs in Cobb County who could see their stock rise over the next few months…
Jayden Ponder – Allatoona
One of the top returning backs in all of North Georgia, the Acworth native is coming off a fantastic sophomore season where he rushed for 1,068 yards and 8 touchdowns. He was one of thew leading rushers in the entire county. Even as a sophomore, Ponder showed he was game-changing back as he rushed for over 100 yards five times last season. His best came against Pope where he rushed for over 200 yards and a touchdown. The 5-foot-11 185-pounder led Allatoona all the way to the state title game where they came up short against an insanely talented Westlake squad. The Buccaneers ended the season 11-1 and went 8-0 in region play due to his toughness and ability to break tackles. He’s one of the top returning backs in the region and is expected to have an even bigger years as a junior.
Isaiah Abbey – Sprayberry
Is there a tougher guy to tackle in Cobb County than Abbey? I’m not so sure. An absolute bowling ball of a back at 6-foot-0 220-pounds, Abbey is a tough, tackle-breaking back who keeps the chains moving. He’s deceptively fast and shows quick feet in the backfield. Once he gets through the line of scrimmage he can be tough to bring down by just one defender. He’s a great north and south runner but has enough speed to get to the edge at times as well. He’s a big, strong back who can carry an offense and has the ability to break off a long run. Abbey is bench-pressing 325-pounds, squatting 455-pounds and power cleans 295-pounds. He’s one of the more powerful backs in the region and one to know for the 2021 season.
Braylen Stokes – Walton
Not too far from Abbey at Sprayberry is another back who still finds himself under the radar. The 5-foot-11 175-pound athlete can play both offense and defense as he’s an exceptional defensive back with impressive toughness and ball skills. He’s also one of the better backs in the region on offense, rushing for 612 yards and 9 touchdowns. He also added another touchdown as a receiver. He showed great hands all season and made a big impact in the passing game, catching 13 passes for 170 yards. He was a reliable option offensively as a sophomore and should see even more opportunities to make plays as a junior.
