It’s a position that has changed over the years as offenses have moved to more of a pass-happy scheme. Linebackers used to be big and thick back in the day, but now they need to be quicker, faster, and more athletic. Not only do linebackers have to help stop the run game in the box, but they have to be able to cover tight ends and other receivers in the middle of the field.
More and more linebackers are starting to emerge, and there are a few in the 2023 class who are starting to see their recruitment take off this summer. Here are some 2023 linebackers on the rise in Georgia…
Raul Aguirre – Cedar Grove
Already known as one of the top 2023 linebackers in the state, the Atlanta native is still earning big-time offers as he enter the summer. The 6-foot-1 220-pounder is great in coverage for someone his age, but he’s also known as one of the biggest hitters in the region. Aguirre is coming off a great sophomore season where he controlled the middle of the field for one of the top defenses in the entire state. If anyone came across the middle, Aguirre was there to make a play. He showed great instincts for a middle linebacker and sniffed out runs on a consistent basis. Whether he was going sideline to sideline or stuffing the middle of the trenches, the four-star always found a way to get to the ball carrier. He picked up another SEC offer this week from South Carolina, and that shouldn’t be the last school to jump on board with an offer.

Gannon Weathersby Gannon Weathersby 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Langston Hughes | 2023 State GA – Westlake
Another Atlanta native, Weathersby is turning into one of the hottest 2023 linebackers in the state. The versatile defender can play both linebacker and safety for the Lions as he’s a sure tackler and has the size at 5-foot-11 195-pounds to play multiple positions. The former Langston Hughes defender showed good ball skills from his linebacker position as well. Most importantly, Weathersby doesn’t miss tackles. Even as a sophomore, he was a tackling machine and was one of the state’s leading tacklers with 145. He also added 10 TFLs, 5.5 sacks, and one INT. He’s easily a D1 talent and has the toughness and physicality to play somewhere big at the next level. He recent added an offer from Middle Tennessee State and could see bigger offers coming his way sooner than later.

Grant Godfrey – North Gwinnett
One of the top 2023 linebackers in Gwinnett County, Godfrey has great bloodlines as his father used to play for the Georgia Bulldogs back in the day. Now it’s Grant’s turn to make a name for himself, and that’s exactly what he did after a big sophomore season last fall. The 6-foot-3 200-pounder made 45 total tackles last year and is expected to have an even bigger role in the defense this fall as a junior. He also made 7 tackles in just 11 games and intercepted one pass. He earned a big SEC offer from Tennessee earlier this month and more are expected to come his way.
