A good portion of Ohio State’s football coaching staff was on hand to run the campers through the 40, cone drills, Indy drills, and 1 v 1’s. Here are some players that caught my eye during the camp.
Lakota East 2023 Austin Siereveld is a 6’5 315 pound offensive linemen. The first thing that I noticed as he was running his 40 yard dash was how thick he was and how little wasted movement there was. I like him as an offensive guard at the college level. He gets downhill easy and has great functional strength. He’s going to be a mauler in the run game and has a strong pass set that will stand the test against most top DL and NT’s. I see Austin as a P5 caliber player who is going to start to pick up major attention in the very near future.
2023 QB Bryce Schondelmyer Bryce Schondelmyer 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Springfield | 2023 State OH of Arcanum was my top Quarterback at the camp. Bryce shows good footwork and throwing mechanics. He’s got a plus arm and is a solid 6’2 and 200 pounds. There are a couple of things that I believe set him apart. He was easily the most consistent QB when it came to making all of the “big boy” throws and with great ball placement putting his receivers in a position to catch and run.. The other thing I love is that he gets major spin on his ball which serves to do two things. First it makes it a very catchable ball for his receivers. Not to get all technical, but it makes it a ball that’s less affected by inclement weather and wind. This will be a big asset for him if he ends up at a school in the Midwest where he’ll be subject to all kinds of weather. I expect Bryce will start getting a great deal of D1 interest in the very near future.
Dublin Coffman has been a Central Ohio factory of football players over the last couple of decades. Will Smith is a 2023 DE for the Shamrocks who I expect to start getting D1 recruiting attention in the not so distant future. Smith has good feet and quickness, but can also hit you with a bull rush that will keep you honest. If the name sounds familiar, it should, Smith is the son of former Buckeye and NFL defensive end Will Smith. Will has talked to Miami of Ohio, West Virginia, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Will as he continue to fill out and get stronger.
Chris Jackson is a 2023 defensive end from The University School in Cleveland. I first noticed him during the defensive linemen doing drill work. Jackson showed good bend quick feet and a strong get off. He translated those traits over to the 1 v 1 session. He was able to beat his man on the edge on one rep. On another rep he was able to get the offensive tackle to overset by using his speed rush and then beating his man to the inside on another rep. Chris’s dad is a former D1 athlete who played DE at West Virginia and Hampton University.
As I was waiting for sign-in’s to start a young man who was waiting not far from me caught my eye. He was a tall, lanky, wide receiver. Not knowing who he was I decided to make my way over and introduce myself. That young man’s name was C.C. Ezirim. Ezirim is a 6’7 wide receiver from Dublin Jerome High School. Before the start of the camp Ezirim was part of a small group of wide receivers who were working with Ohio State Wide Receivers coach Brian Hartline. He’s explosive, has good hands, and a huge catch radius that boast a seven foot wingspan. He passes the eye test in every way. He’s a well though of basketball player as well. I’m very interested to see how Ezirim develops this season and where his football career goes.
