Continue ReadingPrep RedZone breaks down the skill players currently ranked in the Maryland class of 2023 prospect rankings. PRZ MD will add more skill position prospects to the list throughout the summer. For now, we’ll break down each skill player currently ranked on our list. PRZ MD has implemented a scoring system since the updated 2023 rankings were updated. Varsity film reigns supreme over junior varsity, 7v7, and camp film. However, we realize that not everyone has varsity film from last year because of COVID-19 shutting down most Maryland high school football.
With that being said, let’s look at the skill position players in the Class of 2023 that are currently ranked.
QUARTERBACKS
No. 1 Cameron Edge Cameron Edge 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Dematha | 2023 DE /6-1/190/DeMatha
Score: 8.7
Edge is a prospect that I first evaluated while he was an eighth grader. He played a few games this past spring. Edge plays in an offense where he’s lined up mostly in the shotgun. That enables him to scan the defense, make the correct pre-snap read, and make the right throw on most occasions. He’s mechanically sound and releases the football quickly. I haven’t seen enough to determine how mobile he is.
No. 2 Neeo Avery Neeo Avery 6'6" | 230 lbs | DL Our Lady of Good Counsel | 2023 State MD /6-5/230/Good Counsel
Score: 8.4
Avery is a newcomer to the rankings and the would-be challenger for the No. 1 spot in his class. I think he has a bit more mobility than Edge as of right now. I’d like to see film of him throwing a variety of routes that would show where his arm strength is truly at. He holds several FBS offers right now, so it’s obvious that he’s shown enough to college coaches. I got to see some clips of him running routes at a major camp.
RUNNING BACKS
No. 1 Devin Roche Devin Roche 5'7" | 175 lbs | RB Dunbar | 2023 State MD /5-7/150/Dunbar
Score: 8.5
It’s no getting around the fact that Roche is undersized. However, Roche’s skills as a running back and return-man are good enough to make you overlook his size. He has a great burst and gets off the ball quicker than probably anyone else in the state. Roche reaches top speed quickly and will outrun anyone. He has an offer from Maryland. Roche’s high school did not play this past season because of COVID-19. That is probably the only reason he doesn’t have more Division I offers.
No. 2 Jamal Mungo Jamal Mungo 5'9" | 190 lbs | RB Archbishop Carroll | 2023 State MD /5-9/190/Archbishop Carroll
Score: 8.3
Mungo and his team could only play in one game this past spring because of COVID-19. His freshman highlights give more of a glimpse at Mungo’s ability to run inside and outside with the football. The jury is still out somewhat on his skills as a receiver and a blocker. Mungo’s style is of the north-south variety. Physical runner who is difficult to bring down. Shows splendid vision once he gets to the second level. His overall grade should improve once I’m able to verify a few more things in the upcoming months.
WIDE RECEIVERS
No. 1 Nyckoles Harbor Nyckoles Harbor 6'6" | 220 lbs | DL Archbishop Carroll | 2023 State MD /6-4/220/Archbishop Carroll
Score: 9.1
Harbor plays both wide receiver and defensive end. He’s listed as an athlete on other recruiting websites. I’ve slotted him on the offensive side of the football for now. He’s an athletic freak that also runs track. Harbor has been timed at 10.38 seconds in the 100M dash and 21.36 seconds in the 200M dash. That’s just ridiculous speed for a player his size. Harbor played just one game during the 2020-2021 school year because of COVID-19.
No. 2 Kalen Cobb Kalen Cobb 6'5" | 210 lbs | ATH DeMatha | 2023 State MD /6-5/210/DeMatha
Cobb currently has an offer from Maryland. He’s a two-sport athlete (also plays football) and plays on the defensive side of the football. We’ll slot him on this side until further notice.
No. 3 Lamar Patterson Lamar Patterson 5'10" | 180 lbs | WR St. Frances | 2023 MD /5-8/171/St. Frances
Score: 8.6
Patterson is a shifty slot wide receiver that recently reclassified from the 2022 to the 2023 class. The way he breaks in and out of cuts makes him the perfect fit for the slot receiver position. Patterson is also someone you can run on jet sweeps to get big yardage.
TIGHT END
No. 1 Riley Foran Riley Foran 6'4" | 210 lbs | TE Dematha | 2023 State MD /6-4/210/DeMatha
We will collect more information on Foran in the upcoming months. DeMatha is always loaded with talent and we think Foran is one of the best at his position in his class.
