Alex Sanford Alex Sanford 6'2" | 220 lbs | LB Oxford | 2023 State MS appears to be the class of the field at this time and is a name that is already surfacing in college recruiting circles due to over 100 recorded tackles as a sophomore. The tape of the Oxford standout speaks for itself as he is a sure-handed tackler for his age and plays well laterally with athleticism. Sanford holds the number 1 ranked LB spot as of this update and currently holds an offer from his hometown Rebels of Ole Miss.
The 2nd spot on our ranking board update belongs to Travis Posey Jr Travis Posey Jr 6'0" | 180 lbs | LB Ridgeland | 2023 State MS of Ridgeland. As Posey continues to mature from a physical standpoint his name should blossom. A smooth player who will project well to the next level due to his ability to defend the pass and run. Posey reacts well to the football during live action and as he becomes more agile will really stand out due to this. Obvious raw talent was seen on the field last season with Posey.
Jacquavyian Carter Jacquavyian Carter 6'0" | 215 lbs | LB Clinton | 2023 State MS and Austin Ghoston Austin Ghoston 5'11" | 210 lbs | LB Germantown | 2023 State MS are both Jackson area kids with very similar athletic and physical makeups. Both Carter and Ghoston find themselves in the Top 5 of this Rankings Update with tons of untapped potential on the radar moving forward. Carter has a thick build but also nifty athleticism that projects well at the LB position. Expect Carter to really burst on to the scene at Clinton over the course of his Junior year. Ghoston is more of a complete athlete at the time that pursues the football with intent. Good vision and football IQ considering his age. Depending what happens for the Germantown defender growth wise, a move to the secondary could potentially occur in the future.
The top 5 of the Rankings Update rounds out with Gregory Woodard Jr Gregory Woodard Jr 6'0" | 220 lbs | LB Wilkinson County | 2023 State MS of Wilkinson County. Woodard is a downhill force that hits with ill intentions. Good size and weight for the position with potential to become more of a true edge rusher as he matures. Woodard has a good understanding of how to use his strength for his best benefit and truly is a wrecking ball in getting to the backfield.
A name to watch creeping up the board of this rankings update is Montrell Chapman Montrell Chapman 6'2" | 190 lbs | LB South Panola | 2023 State MS of South Panola. Only elite ballplayers get on the field as sophomores in Batesville and that is exactly what happened last season for Chapman. Obvious raw elements are present in his game but strength and size are on his side and as the whole project begins to come together Chapman will begin to get noticed. Don’t sleep on this rising junior who could play a big role in 6A for South Panola.
