This 2023 class in Mississippi is a special one. Usually, there are about 2 guys each year who can continue playing at the next level, but the 2023 class has at least 3 right now! Let’s dive into the updated rankings!
Maintaining the No. 1 spot, Madison Central’s Vic Sutton Vic Sutton 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Madison Central | 2023 State MS has been an absolute standout this offseason. Although he only played a few games last season, Sutton put up enough tape to earn offers from schools around the country. Sutton has great athleticism as a runner and poise in the pocket as a passer. With his big arm, he is able to complete any throw asked of him and can make plays downfield on the run as well. Watch for him to dominate this upcoming season on the ground and in the air.
At the No. 2 spot, Heritage Academy’s Mack Howard Mack Howard 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Oxford | 2023 State MS has been another guy who has made his rounds on the camp trail this summer. He’s added offers from Cincinnati and Houston and has made his way up to Louisville for an unofficial visit. Howard is a prototypical passer who shows great control over the offense that he runs. He has a smooth delivery and great accuracy downfield. Howard throws receivers open and sees the field at an advanced level early in his career. This guy could easily take the No. 1 spot. Sutton and Howard will be known as two of the state’s most elite passers in recent memory, and could easily be ranked as a 1a and 1b when it is all said and done.
Down at Gautier, Ole Miss baseball commit Kaden Irving Kaden Irving 6'2" | 215 lbs | QB Gautier | 2023 State MS takes the No. 3 spot. Gautier’s recent shift to the air raid has allowed Irving’s ability to be on full display. He has a quick release and can throw from a variety of arm angles. Irving can make throws on the run and extend plays when the pocket collapses. Fully expecting him to put up another year of big numbers and production this season. Although his future may be in baseball, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the football offers started coming in soon.
Newcomer Deljay Bailey Deljay Bailey 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Petal | 2023 State MS from Biloxi has been another guy who has dominated the 7v7 and camp circuit this summer. Bailey has a huge arm that could be the strongest in the class of 2023. He throws a great ball of play action and operates effectively from both under center and the gun. Bailey has a smooth dropback and navigates the pocket well. He processes reads quickly and can always find the open man downfield. He currently lists offers from Southern Mississippi and South Alabama, but watch for more schools to get involved as he puts up a full year of big time stats.
Checking in at No. 5, Trip Maxwell Trip Maxwell 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Hartfield Academy | 2023 State MS from Oxford High has been a big offseason riser. He also plays for the Mississippi Heat 7v7 and has been having a great spring and summer. Maxwell operates well from the pocket with a smooth delivery downfield. He throws receivers open and shows tenacity in the pocket. What stands out most about him is his toughness. This is not a guy that caves when the moment gets big and there is pressure in his face. Maxwell plays with intense swagger and led his team to 2 of the largest comeback victories in school history last season. Really intriguing prospect for the 2021 season.
From Wesson Attendance Center, Will Loy Will Loy 6'1" | 170 lbs | QB Wesson Attendance Center | 2023 State MS takes the No. 6 spot. Loy put up a huge year last season throwing for 2700 yards and 30 touchdowns with only 3 interceptions. The young gunslinger has a great long ball and throws with good accuracy at all levels. Loy does a great job at navigating the pocket and making plays on the run as well. Expecting another season with big time numbers from this guy. Only a matter of time before he starts adding offers.
At No. 7, newcomer Brawner Cregeen Brawner Cregeen 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Corinth | 2023 State MS from at Corinth has emerged. We found Cregeen through his submission to our prospect index, and sure are happy that we came across his tape. This is your modern day spread quarterback who can operate an RPO offense effectively. Cregeen can make plays as a runner in the open field, or pull the ball and quickly get it out to his receivers in space. He has a big arm with good zip on the football. Expecting him to rise as the 2021 season kicks off.
At the No. 8 spot, North Point’s Hudson Brown Hudson Brown 6'5" | 210 lbs | QB Northpoint Christian | 2023 State MS has maintained his position as a top 10 quarterback in this class. Brown has prototypical size for the position at 6’5″ 210 and has the arm talent to match it. Brown has a nasty pump fake that he uses to manipulate defense backs to get his receivers wide open. He can zip the ball downfield and has some incredible strength to propel it on vertical breaking routes. Brown could wind up being the best deep ball thrower in the 2023 class. Watch for him to take over and make a name for himself during his junior season.
Dual threat Ty Murphy Ty Murphy 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB Eupora | 2023 State MS from Eupora checks in at our No. 9 spot. Murphy has been a bit of a sleeper so far in this class, but he sure does have talent. This guy is deadly with his legs. He is a threat to keep it on every run play, and when he does, he fully intends on scoring every time. He has great speed in the open field and can make defenders miss with his slick running style. As a passer, Murphy is still developing but shows talent on intermediate breaking routes. Big time sleeper who should pop up on some radars soon.
Finally, to finish things off for the top 10, Harrison Central’s Christian Turner Christian Turner 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Harrison Central | 2023 State MS enters the rankings. Turner took his team to the second round of the playoffs as a sophomore and put up some great tape to go along with it. He throws a pretty ball downfield with a quick release and poise in the pocket. He can also use his legs to make plays and take off for big gains downfield. Turner is shifty and can get out of would-be sacks with ease. Pumped to watch his junior campaign because it should be special.
And that’s our top 10! An exciting group of passers for the 2023 class should continue to grow, but watch for these guys to tear it up this upcoming season.
