We’ve come across a ton of rising junior talent, and we know that we aren’t even close to being done yet! In this series, we will be evaluating some of our most recent ranking additions to the 2023 class. Let’s check out some of the talented prospects we missed out on the first time around!
John Slaughter John Slaughter 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Southaven | 2023 State MS | DB | Southaven
Slaughter was a guy we were lucky to hear about right before our rankings came out. We quickly added him in, and the more tape we watch, the higher we think he could rise in the next update. The Southaven product stands at 6’2″ 180 and has the athleticism to become an elite safety at the next level. Slaughter’s best attribute is by far his ball skills. This is a guy who can easily diagnose the play, break on the route, and make an outstanding break up or interception. As good as he is in pass coverage, he isn’t afraid to come up and make plays in the run game either. Slaughter has the potential to be one of the top ranked players in Mississippi when it is all said and done. He currently lists offers from Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Arkansas State.
Deljay Bailey Deljay Bailey 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Petal | 2023 State MS | QB | Biloxi
Deljay Bailey Deljay Bailey 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Petal | 2023 State MS has been a player that has gained a lot of traction this off season. Last season at Biloxi, he operated in an offense that allowed him to throw a ton of deep bombs off of playaction. In 7v7s and camps, we have been able to see Bailey operate from the gun and throw the ball around extremely well. At 6’2″ 185, Bailey has a good frame for a quarterback with plenty of room left to grow and fill out. As a passer, this guy could have one of the strongest arms in the state. Bailey has a fluid throwing motion and is able to release the ball at multiple angles. He gets a ton of zip under the ball and can complete deep balls well while also threading the needle into some small windows. Bailey also throws with great anticipation and accuracy downfield. Really intriguing prospect with the arm strength and physical gifts he has. Bailey currently lists offers from South Alabama and Southern Miss.
DeQuarious White DeQuarious White 6'4" | 320 lbs | OL Holmes County | 2023 State MS | OL | Holmes Central
A member of a very talented Holmes Central team, DeQuarious White DeQuarious White 6'4" | 320 lbs | OL Holmes County | 2023 State MS immediately stands out with his frame of 6’4″ 320. White is a nasty interior line prospect who has the strength to dominate anybody across from him. He plays with a powerful base and has a well developed upper body to clear the path for the back. What stands out most about him is the edge that he plays with. White plays through the whistle every snap and makes sure that defenders end up on the ground. As big as he is, White is also surprisingly agile in space. He runs well and shows the ability to pull and make plays in more open field. This is the type of player that college coaches will take notice of quickly. White currently lists no college offers.
Walter James Owens | WR | Mendenhall
Walter James Owens could be one of the best kept secrets in Mississippi right now. This is truly a guy that can do it all. Owens lines up at both defensive back and wide receiver and makes big time plays on both sides. As a receiver, Owens has good length and versatility that allows him to play in the slot or outside. He runs well in space and has smooth hands when the ball is in the air. As a route runner, Owens sells double moves well and can make defenders trip over themselves in a matter of a second. As a defender, Owens anticipates routes well and has fantastic ball skills. Really like this guy on both sides of the ball and think he could develop into a playmaker either way. Owens currently lists no college offers.
