Today we begin with those guys who play with the football more than others and that’s the quarterbacks
(Prospects are listed by their #TN2023 Top 100 Ranking)
‘23 (QB) Marcel Reed Marcel Reed 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB MBA | 2023 State TN (6’2 180) – MBA (QB Ranked: #1 State Rank: #3)
– Reed is considered the top QB in the ‘23 class right now due to his combination of size, arm talent, smarts and athleticism. He is a poised competitor behind center that can make plays in & out of the pocket. He does need to add more weight but certainly has the frame to do so. Reed has a lot of competition for the top spot but has the tools and upside to remain here for the duration of his recruitment.

– This guy could be the biggest contender against Reed for the top QB spot in the ‘23 class as Minchey has a beautiful, accurate right arm along with great size that fits very well on the Power Five level. He is as polished as a passer that we have in the state, regardless of grade. Much like all players, Minchey must continue maturing and developing overall but the upside is there to become big time in the college game.

– One of the fastest risers up the recruiting charts this summer has been Glenn and it’s due to his cerebral demeanor behind center along with his size and accurate passing. This West Tennessee product controls the pocket very well from both his command and his footwork. Glenn has the ability to hang in the pocket and deliver the ball down field or tuck it and run. Expect a bevy of offers to come his way over the next several months.

– Parson is considered the top dual threat guy in our rankings due to his unique skills as both a passer and a runner. The Raptors star signal caller has a big right arm that can push the ball down the field or work the intermediate routes. He also has good vision and knowledge of defenses, so he knows when to tuck it and run for positive yards. Parson is a big play threat waiting to happen that college coaches are currently drooling over.

– This is yet another pure passer with strong mechanics and the ability to make all the throws. Lamberth is a big presence in the pocket that will stand strong and deliver the ball down the field while taking the big hit. He also has enough mobility to make plays outside the pocket as well. The Cougars rising junior is one of the pure passers in this class and will surely garner more recruiting attention soon.

A cerebral young man behind center, Damron is as mentally tough as you will find. He is the ultimate worker with a strong right arm and the ability to place the ball with accuracy and timing. This is a quarterback you definitely want on the field and inside the locker room.

‘23 (QB) Braylen Ragland Braylen Ragland 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Bartlett | 2023 State TN (6’2 185) – White Station (QB Ranked: #7 State Rank: #47)
– This West Tennessee product is dripping with upside and potential and after seeing him in person recently, Ragland will be rising up these rankings very soon. The Spartans top offensive talent proved that not only does he have a cannon right arm but also the ability to place the ball accurately. Ragland is also one of the best in his class at throwing on the run as well. The ceiling is very high for Ragland and a big junior season could propel his recruitment in a major way.

‘23 (QB) Jaylen Abston Jaylen Abston 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Lebanon | 2023 State TN (6’2 185) – Lebanon (QB Ranked: #8 State Rank: #54)
– Abston is headed into a big junior year for his progression as a quarterback and his college recruitment. He already sports a few FCS offers but sports the skill set and upside to aim higher, depending on his ongoing development. Abston has college size along with strong mechanics and the ability to place the ball with pinpoint accuracy. He does need to keep learning about himself and where he can take his game but the talents are there to play under center in the college game.

– A two sport star who’s future could be bright on the baseball diamond, Cassidy is a talented young man with size, mechanics and a smooth throwing motion that translates to the next level but will he stick with football? Cassidy is a big time prospect as a pitcher for baseball but does hold an offer from MTSU and a future on the football field if desired. His upcoming junior season could be key towards that decision.

– The 1st representative from East Tennessee is Potts and he is a good one to start with as he works as a pure passer that has the athleticism to make plays outside the pocket if and when needed. Potts has a gunslinger mentality. He is not afraid to place the ball in tight spaces and he has solid arm strength to support that. The Panthers star quarterback needs more body development but the passing skills are to reach the college level.

– Garinger is one of the biggest wildcards on this list and in these rankings. He is a pure pocket passer that has been dealing with an arm/shoulder injury over the past year that if healed properly, places him as one of the top pure passers in this class. If the injury persists, it will be curious to see where Garinger develops over the upcoming Fall football season.

After waiting his turn behind a veteran signal caller, Sharpe is poised as the #1 guy now and ready to lead his team to the promised land. Sporting nice size along with a smooth throwing motion, Sharpe is a poised guy behind center with the skill set and upside to reach the college level. This coming season will be huge towards those endeavors.

– Camp season has been good thus far for Lunsford and it’s a moment in time he needs as this coming junior season may be one where he doesn’t see the field as much. Lunsford is a talented young man with a lot of college tools but he currently sits behind a veteran Sr quarterback that should be the main guy this Fall. Hitting the camp scene hard this summer has been key for Lunsford as he may not see significant action until his senior season.

– The Karns Beavers football team is feeling giddy as they have some pieces to make some noise this coming football season and if they make a loud statement, it would be helped by the right arm of Huffaker. An ultra competitor with size and a strong right arm, Huffaker is a leader behind center that can do a little bit of everything at quarterback. He still needs to keep developing his craft but upside is there to work his way into the college game one day.

Position Overview
– This is the deepest and most talented crop of quarterbacks that we have had in quite a while. It’s not just that this group of gunslingers is top heavy with talent but you can go almost 20 prospects deep and find guys who will be throwing the ball on the collegiate level one day.
Several quarterbacks in these initial rankings are already known guys and will be throwing the pigskin on the television and in the Power Five ranks but we also have a few others that have the upside to possibly reach that level too. The top guys making waves right now include Reed, Minchey, Glenn, Parson, Damron and Ragland. Those six names have generated the most offers and buzz thus far through the recruiting cycle, especially Reed, Glenn and Parson.
Not to be overshadowed by the top guys, others like Lamberth, Abston, Cassidy and Sharpe have the size, passing skills and upside to be considered among the best as well.
The upcoming Fall football season will be huge for most of the guys listed here. Quarterback is the one position that is recruited earlier and heavier than anything else, which means recruiting starts early and college coaches will be on the lookout to see progression for these prospects during the upcoming season.
At the end of the day and the process for these guys, I expect to see all the prospects listed above to sign college scholarships papers with a lot of them headed to the Division 1 level.
