Some 2023's who have had productive spring seasons are still looking for that fist offer, and seem to be a bit under the radar. All of these guys have showed strong potential and are maturing quickly at their positions, and possess the intangibles to translate to the next level. Take a look at 5 players from the 2023 class who project to take a big leap from their sophomore to junior seasons:
<strong>Dempsy James</strong>, <em>QB, 6'1" 185lbs, Spanaway Lake<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-24527" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/redzone/uploads/2020/06/Generic-Featured-Image-2-300x187.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="187" /></em>
James is a dual-threat QB that put up 1,158 yards and 17 TD's through the air, with 221 yards and 7 TD's on the ground. I really like his "pass first" mentality. He does a great job abandoning the pass only when necessary. He's poised and collected in the pocket with good footwork, and does a great job identifying favorable matchups on the outside. He could improve timing, but I expect that to come with maturity as the game slows down for him. He throws with good touch and trajectory on deep balls, giving his receivers a shot to make a play. Excellent speed as a ball carrier and is extremely dangerous and elusive in space. He displays solid lateral agility and COD, and will be a big time name in Washington high school football for the next two seasons.
<strong>Job Kralik</strong>, <em>WR, 5’11" 170lbs, Eatonville </em>
Kralik is a very dynamic player that can be utilized in a variety of ways. He was able to snag 15 receptions for 354 yards and 7 TD’s in just 6 games played. He’s a solid route runner with active feet at the top of his route to get in and out of breaks well. He does a great job showing a slight hesitation to set up deep routes, then uses his speed to get over the top of DB’s, frequently taking the top off defenses. Very good top end speed and is a big play threat with the ball in his hands as they utilize him on reverses, jet sweeps, and as a KR.
<strong>Jordan Mua</strong>, <em>DE, 6’0" 205lbs, Foster </em>
Mua filled a huge role and had a very productive sophomore season with 8 sacks, 7 hurries, 30 tackles, and 7 TFL’s in just a 4 game span. Not your idea build for a DE, but his athleticism makes up for it. He flashes a nice initial ball get off and utilizes athletic hands to swipe and disengage from offensive linemen. Constant menace in the backfield with good hand finesse overall, and had a big game against Highline. Pretty good short area quickness on some plays as he was untouched on film. I’d like to see him improve his motor and strength at the POA, but holds good potential overall.
[player_tooltip player_id="87415" first="Kayde" last="Bodine"], <em>QB, 6’0" 170lbs, Auburn Mountainview </em>
Bodine threw for 1,016 yards and 14 TD’s in 5 games, flashing strong potential as a dual-threat QB. He started his freshman and sophomore seasons and has continued to improve and produce each year, and I don’t see that slowing down. Good poise in the pocket when he has time, and delivers with a smooth, effortless release. He shows flexibility in his upper half with the ability to extend plays and throw off-platform and can buy time with his feet. He shows solid placement on deeper throws when he uses touch. I would like to see him improve footwork consistency in the pocket and use velocity more on tight window throws, but he holds strong potential as he continues to develop and perform.
<strong>Eugene Camacho,</strong> <em>LB, 5'10" 235lbs, Spanaway Lake<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-125161" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/redzone/uploads/2021/03/28649813-C4AB-4716-A208-A8B502BC5487.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="200" /></em>
Another promising young prospect from Spanaway Lake, Camacho did a great job as a MLB as he was awarded "PCL Defensive Player Of The Year". He accumulated 45 tackles and 7 TFL's in a 6 game season. He shows good instincts for a young linebacker and does a good job breaking down to tackle. He identifies opening alleys well and meets ball carriers in the lane at the LOS. He could add strength, which should come with time in the weight room and maturity. Pretty good understanding of zone responsibilities and will be a definite '23 kid to watch on the Spanaway Lake defense in the fall.
