Kirtland Central’s Greg Jenks stepped down as the Broncos football coach in order to spend more time will his mother, who has been in ill health (needs back surgery; diabetic) for several months. She lives in Pasco, WA.
Jenks coached Kirtland Central for six seasons, compiling a record of 33-25 with three playoff appearances (2016, 2018 and 2019). Kirtland Central played in a bowl game at UNM’s Stadium this spring.
Jenks told the local newspaper that he hasn’t ruled out a return to coaching in the future.
“I feel like I’m not done,” Jenks told the Farmington Daily Times. “I’ve got so much more to grow and learn as a coach. There’s more progress to be made out here. The coaching bug is still in me. I absolutely want to coach again one day. I hope I’m not done coaching.”
In another move, Grants coach Rio Thompson resigned following the recent birth his son. The Pirates went 3-1 this spring and reached the semifinals of the Class 4A playoffs in 2019 before losing a 48-41 shootout to Bloomfield.
