This could be due to a number of reasons, but they all have one thing in common. Untapped potential that if reached, can make them into big time FBS caliber players a few years down the line. Below, we will break down some Northern California prospects that offer nice upside at the next level.
WR Julian Womack, Saint Marys-Berkley HS
Womack is one of the best put together prospects in the state. Standing at 6’2+ with the frame and shoulders to pack on even more weight, he has a huge catch radius and elite open field speed for his size with tons of untapped potential. Explosive out of his stance, he is a vertical threat that wins 50/50 balls with a nice high point and ball location skills in traffic. He does a good job at using his body to box out defenders and has strong contact balance after the catch with terrific downfield speed in the open field while consistently able to separate. Currently holding one offer from Navy, I would not be surprised to see more FBS/FCS offers come his way.
QB Kenyon Nelson Kenyon Nelson 6'1" | 205 lbs | ATH Lincoln - Stockton | 2023 State CA , Lincoln-Stockton HS
Nelson is one of the most electric players across the entire state of California and has quietly moved through the off-season but is one of the most talented kids the region has to offer regardless of class, hands down. On tape, he is mobile in the pocket with elite lateral movement abilities and open field speed downfield with natural instincts. He has a powerful arm and can throw into tight windows while throwing his receivers open from 25+ yards and can throw both in-breaking and outbreaking routes against tight coverage while not afraid to allow his receivers to go up and make a play. He currently holds one offer from Tennessee and is a very well put together prospect with tremendous lower body strength and overall movement abilities.
DE Brady Nassar, Amador Valley HS
Nassar is only a rising Junior but one of the best pass rushers across Northern California, regardless of class. Already very physically mature, he is explosive off the edge and shows he has a wide array of both power and speed moves while able to bend naturally at the point of attack. He plays with a strong use of hands while getting underneath blockers with good drive and extension and is a high motor player that is physical and tough near the LOS. Standing at 6’4+ and 240 pounds, he has the frame to be a FBS caliber edge defender while also athletic enough to play in space and in the flats if needed.
DE Tovie Martin Tovie Martin 6'4" | 235 lbs | DL Clovis | 2023 CA , Clovis HS
Martin is one of the top edge defenders in the Valley in the 2023 class and one of the best across the region as well. He has ideal length for the position with a powerful lower body and does a good job at converting speed to power off the edge and using his arm length and explosion to his advantage. Not just an elite pass rusher, he is a good run defender due to in-game understanding and reading his keys well while scraping backside when needed and taking on blockers with heavy hands/ keeping his outside shoulder free and knowing when to wrong arm/surf. Still a raw and developing player, he offers nice upside at the next level and is far from reaching his full potential.
