Overview (Class 2A Preseason Ranking: #8)
For the first time in recent memory, the Marlow Outlaws were one of the top teams in their respective class. 2020 was a season to remember, even though it didn’t end the way they would like. Marlow would come into the 2020 season with a fresh start as they would drop down from Class 3A to 2A. Not many knew what to expect from the Outlaws but they proved that they would just provide Class 2A with even more depth in an already deep and competitive class. Marlow started off the year with wins over Chickasha and Anadarko by a combined four points. After that, they would flat out dominate. They would run over their district and walk away with the district championship. The closest district match-up came in week nine when they beat Frederick by 16 points. They also shut out three other district opponents on their way to the playoffs. Thy had a close call against Chandler in the third round before squaring off with eventual champ Metro Christian in the quarterfinals. The Outlaws would score with just over 2:30 remaining to go up 31-28 but that was too much time left. Metro would drive down and score what ended up being the game-winning touchdown with just 47 seconds left to send them to the semifinals. You know that Marlow hasn’t forgotten about their only loss of the 2020 season and have used that as motivation coming into this year. Marlow comes in at #8 in our 2A preseason rankings. They bring back their best players but they’ll need to build depth around them at the other positions. The non-district schedule will be tough but the district could end up being a cake walk again for the Outlaws. Marlow certainly believes that not only will they run the table again in the regular season, but they plan on continuing that in the postseason.

will be Marlow’s quarterback but he’s also the best kicker in the state. Gilbert earned first team All State honors last year and has only gotten better this offseason. Gilbert as a quarterback has also improved and will continue to get better. He threw for nearly 2,000 yards a year ago and will give the Outlaws plenty of experience on the offensive side of the ball. However, when it comes to the next level, Gilbert is an All American-caliber kicker and punter and is one of the best in the nation.

as a standout athlete is senior Will Bergner. He’ll be Gilbert’s top receiving threat on offense and he’ll be one of the better players on the defensive side of the ball. Bergner was Marlow’s leading wide receiver last year and they’re working in some new faces at that position that could have breakout years, but Bergner is experienced and knows what to expect. On the defensive side, he’s a ball hawk in the secondary but he’s not afraid to come up and help in run support and lay the wood. We like the 1-2 punch of Gilbert and Bergner as one of the better QB-WR duos in Class 2A.

Notable
In 2020, the Outlaws benefitted from dropping down to Class 2A. Marlow made the 3A playoffs in eight consecutive seasons from 2012-2019 but they made it out of the first round only once during that stretch. Last year, Marlow would make it all the way to the quarterfinal round and would give eventual state champion Metro Christian all they wanted before eventually falling by four points. The new ADM enrollment numbers, which decide which schools are in which classifications, will be coming out at some point in August. Based on the last ADM numbers that were released in 2020, Marlow’s trip to Class 2A might just last two years. If Marlow’s standing stays the same from last year, they’ll be moving back up to Class 3A in 2022. The Outlaws will be trying to make the most of this year as they are one of the top teams in Class 2A. We should know by the start of the season if this is going to be the last go-around for the Outlaws in 2A for the time-being.
2021 Schedule/Games To Watch
Sept. 3 – Chickasha
Sept. 10 – Anadarko
– Marlow’s non-district schedule will give us a great idea of just how competitive this team will be this season. After taking on a talented Chickasha team in week one, Marlow will host Anadarko. The Warriors are ranked in Class 3A and have the talent to return to contending for championships. The Outlaws would escape their 2020 match-up with a one-point victory over Anadarko. All in all, this is the toughest game on the Marlow schedule and we’ll see it happening in week two. The Outlaws will face several 2A teams that could push them but without a doubt the toughest test comes here against Anadarko.
Sept. 17 – AT Atoka
– The week after their showdown with Anadarko, Marlow will hit the road for the first time of the season to take on Atoka. We’ve mentioned plenty of times how deep and competitive Class 2A has been and will be and this is another good example. Atoka is not in our preseason rankings but they should be considered a top ten team because they will be in contention this fall. Their 2020 match-up ended up being cancelled. And for the Outlaws, this will be the last test before opening up district play. And as mentioned earlier, this district isn’t exactly a gauntlet run and the Atoka game could be the last big game before the playoffs.
