Despite being a smaller update in our cycle, the end of summer gives the chance to reflect on some players that made big moves in our rankings. Here, we break down a few guys that shot up our rankings board.
Skyler Locklear Skyler Locklear 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2022 State NC , QB, 6’1 185- Cleveland
Locklear impressed us during the year with his accurate arm and great decision making, but he wowed over the summer with some impressive testing numbers. At a megacamp at Mercer College, he was clocked at 4.60 in the 40, putting him in the company of receivers and running backs. He stood out at several camps with his accuracy and I was impressed enough to advocate he move into the top slot for 2022 quarterbacks.
Grantt Logan Grantt Logan 6'1" | 205 lbs | QB Providence Day | 2022 State NC , QB, 6’1 205- Providence Day
Logan has everything you could want from a rising senior signal caller outside of extensive starting experience. He’s been behind some talented quarterbacks on a loaded Providence Day offense for the past few years, but should get the opportunity to start as a senior. In camps over the summer, his size and arm strength impressed us enough to project him as a mid-D1 recruit, despite the limited film. If he plays to his potential this fall, colleges will beat down the door asking for his services.
Samuel Whitt Samuel Whitt 6'0" | 275 lbs | OL East Surry | 2022 State NC , OL, 6’ 280- East Surry
Sometimes, talented players just need to show they can play against top competition to move up a lot in the rankings. That’s the case with Whitt, who made our 1A all-state team after a great year at East Surry but didn’t face many top-tier defensive linemen. On the camp circuit in 2021, he went toe-to-toe with future Power Five players, often besting them in one-on-ones. For us, this was enough to move up a player that has checked every other box so far. He’s flying under-the-radar on the recruiting trail and frankly deserves more attention.
Gabe Berardi Gabe Berardi 6'7" | 235 lbs | TE Christ School | 2022 State NC , TE, 6’7 235- Christ School
Berardi has seen his recruitment take off in recent months thanks to some great measurables and testing numbers. Since Christ School played in the fall last year, many forgot about him in the spring only to see him emerge on the camp circuit. He runs excellent routes, especially for a bigger tight end and he’s shown improvement in his run blocking technique. I’m expecting him to take another big step forward this season.
