#TNHSFB: Top Games – Week Two
Week One of Tennessee high school football was outstanding and it looks like Week Two provides yet another strong slate of games with several highly talented teams facing off against each other.
Here are the games we feel are the top places to be at this week
1. Powell (1-0) at Maryville (1-0) (Thurs.)
– What a game to kick off Week Two of Tennessee high school football! Two East Tennessee powers meet up in Maryville on Thursday for what should be an exciting game full of big plays. Both the Panthers and Rebels come into this game winning their opening week games but both did so in different fashions. Maryville eased by Heritage while Powell had to come from behind to defeat a good Anderson Co. team, 60-48. The Panthers are a little more battle tested going into this matchup but the Rebels are a well oiled machine that will be ready to compete. This should be an outstanding football game to watch and attend.
2. Pearl Cohn (1-0) at MBA (1-0) (Fri.)
– The teams listed here are both going into this week’s game on high notes but in different ways. The Big Red demolished a highly talented Ravenwood team last Friday while the Firebirds, who are a young team, put up a lot of yards and points in their win over Cane Ridge. These are two traditional Nashville powers that are well sound, hard nosed football teams, so regardless of the winner, this should be a fun game to watch. The veteran MBA team could be too much for the youthful Firebirds but it should be a great learning experience for them going forward.
3. Trousdale Co. (1-0) at Upperman (1-0) (Fri.)
– If you are a fan of defense and low scoring, close knit games, this may be the contest for you. Now I know that doesn’t sound exciting but what the Yellow Jackets and Bees bring to this game are well coached, hard nosed teams that don’t be themselves too often. Both these teams want to run the ball and maintain the clock but something must give. Trousdale is the traditional power but Upperman might just be the better team this year. Either way, this looks to be a close game that is not settled to the very end.
4. Brentwood Academy (1-0) at CPA (1-0) (Fri.)
– Middle Tennessee powers clash at CPA on Friday night where the road Eagles face off with a Lions team that is loaded and primed for a deep postseason run. Both teams are coming off big week one wins, especially Brentwood Academy who went down to Florence, Alabama and won a big out of state matchup. They did so behind a talented, young offense led by junior Ian Scott Ian Scott 5'10" | 165 lbs | ATH Brentwood Academy | 2023 State TN . CPA is the veteran team and favorite to win this game but the Eagles have youthful talent that shouldn’t be intimidated by the road atmosphere.
5. Westview (1-0) at Peabody (1-0) (Fri.)
– All eyes in the West Tennessee region should be on this game as you have the defending two time state champ Golden Tide team hosting a Westview squad led by current Alabama commit, quarterback Ty Simpson Ty Simpson 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Westview | 2022 State TN . This is the season that the Chargers of Westview have been waiting on and if they want to contend for a state title, beating Peabody needs to be something they do. It will be tough as the Golden Tide is a cohesive team that plays sound football and it has quite a bit of talent too. Westview has the signal caller and skill on offense to put up points but will it be enough points to get past a strong Peabody, title contending team.
6. Ensworth (1-0) at Baylor (1-0) (Fri.)
– Friday down in Chattanooga, Ensworth will have their first big test of the season as they compete against a very talented Red Raiders team that is coming off a big win vs. Rabun-Gap, Georgia. Both these teams sport Power Five, D1 caliber prospects, so it’s a scouts dream to view this game and for others to watch. Baylor is stacked with a team that has their eyes on a state title, as does Ensworth but the Red Raiders may have too much firepower for the Tigers in this game. It should be an entertaining game no matter what.
7. Davidson Academy (1-0) at Boyd Buchanan (1-0) (Fri.)
– Both the Bears and the Buccaneers had comforting wins in Week One but now they meet in Chattanooga this Friday for what will be the first big test for both squads. These are two D2-Class AA teams that have their eyes on Cookeville at season’s end, so it will be interesting to see which team is closer to the goals after this week’s game. The intriguing matchup to watch in this contest will be the Bears defense vs. a talented Bucs offense. Davidson Academy is a two time state champ and that is what the Bucs are striving to become, so beating the Bears would be a great step in that direction.
8. Houston (1-0) at Briarcrest Christian (1-0) (Fri.)
– This is a game from the West Tennessee region that I am excited to follow and watch as you have two talented programs that both looked impressive in Week One and both have eyes on deep playoff runs. The Saints of Briarcrest are breaking in new offensive weapons but they are talented in juniors (QB) JD Sherrod JD Sherrod 6'1" | 205 lbs | QB Briarcrest Chrst. | 2023 State TN and power back Ahmad Miller Ahmad Miller 6'0" | 205 lbs | RB Whitehaven | 2023 State TN while the Mustangs are doing much of the same, so it will be interesting to see which program is ahead of schedule with their team progression. This could be high or low scoring but either way, it should be a close contest till the end.
9. MUS (1-0) at Germantown (0-1) (Fri.)
– The Red Devils come into this game after an opening week loss to Whitehaven but this is a talented Germantown team that the visiting Owls should not sleep on. This could be a high scoring affair between two offenses that like to get up and down the field quickly with athletes all over the field. The Owls have the star quarterback in George Hamsley but the Red Devils have an athletic defense that could slow him and the Owls offense down. I could see this game going either direction with either team winning.
10. McMinn Co. (1-0) at Cleveland (1-0) (Fri.)
– A quiet matchup for most across the state but for the Southeast Tennessee region, this is a big game between two solid programs that played tough, hard fought games in Week One. Both come into this contest at 1-0 and have junior quarterbacks in Jayden Miller Jayden Miller 6'1" | 200 lbs | ATH McMinn Co. | 2023 State TN (MMC) and Drew Lambert Drew Lambert 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2023 State TN (CLEV) to lean on and lead their teams this season and to a hopeful victory in this game. The key to this game for the eventual winner could be the defense and who is able to slow down the opposing offense.
Other Games of Note: Rockvale at Smyrna, McCallie at Calhoun (Ga), GCA at South Doyle, Henry Co. at Beech, Union City at USJ, Dyer Co. at Dyersburg, Springfield at Clarksville, Independence at Lipscomb, White Station at Memp. Central, Ravenwood at BGA, Bradley Central at Walker Valley, East Hamilton at Portland
