#TNHSFB: Week Two Recap
Two weeks into the high school season here in Tennessee, we have seen some close games and serious talent but there is so much more to go as the year has just started!
Here we recap the biggest stories from last week’s action in Week Two.
Clutch Wins for Possible State Title Contending Teams
Week two provided an opportunity for a lot of teams to test themselves against other high quality teams and see how much progression thus far in the season.
You did have some teams stumble but overall, the top programs in this state for the 2021 season came away with victories and did so in great fashion.
The D2-Class AA defending state champ CPA Lions had a fight on their hands Friday night with Brentwood Academy. The Lions trailed most of the night until taking the lead late, then with less than five seconds remaining, the Eagles fumbled on the two yard line to seal the 21-17 victory for CPA.
It took a big night from Lions star quarterback Cade Law Cade Law 6'1" | 210 lbs | QB CPA | 2022 State TN to get the win but the job was completed.
Two West Tennessee programs Briarcrest Christian and Houston clashed together in a game that was not settled till the end with the Saints walking away with a 28-21 win.
Briarcrest is working in some new pieces like Ahmad Miller Ahmad Miller 6'0" | 205 lbs | RB Whitehaven | 2023 State TN , Reed Linder Reed Linder 5'10" | 180 lbs | WR Briarcrest Christian | 2023 State TN and JD Sherrod JD Sherrod 6'1" | 205 lbs | QB Briarcrest Chrst. | 2023 State TN who all played big parts in their victory over the Mustangs while the opposing Houston team is well balanced but did not have quite enough to get by the Saints.
Lipscomb Academy had another dominating performance in Week Two where they destroyed Independence, 62-7 and did so with ease.
The Mustangs are loaded for the 2021 season and look primed for a run at the D2-Class AA state title, especially with quarterback Luther Richesson Luther Richesson 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Lipscomb Academy | 2022 State TN and Boston College commit, Alex Broome Alex Broome 5'8" | 190 lbs | RB Lipscomb Academy | 2022 State TN leading the way.
Peabody extended their winning streak to 39 games in a row after their 31-29 close victory last Friday over Alabama commit Ty Simpson Ty Simpson 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Westview | 2022 State TN and the Westview Chargers.
The Chargers came to play and gave Peabody everything they wanted but the Golden Tide are a well oiled machine that knows how to win, especially in close contests. Somebody will eventually beat Peabody but right now they look poised for another title run.
Many view MBA as a championship caliber team and they are but last Friday they fell at home to Pearl Cohn, 26-21 who are now 2-0 on the season and they have looked good doing it.
Led by junior quarterback Marcel Reed Marcel Reed 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB MBA | 2023 State TN , the Big Red struggled to score points against a stingy and athletic Firebirds defense. They were able to keep the game close but were not strong enough to get past a talented Pearl Cohn team.
Knox. West has opened their 2021 season at 2-0 after defeating Farragut last Friday, 41-38 in what was a fun, high scoring affair that saw the game go back and forth till the very end.
Admirals quarterback Dawson Moore Dawson Moore 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB Farragut | 2022 State TN put up some huge numbers and did everything he could to will his team victory but their defense could not slow down the Knox. West offense that was every bit as potent.
The two headed rushing attack of juniors Trevon Barfield Trevon Barfield 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Station Camp | 2023 TN and Jai Hundley Jai Hundley 5'9" | 195 lbs | RB Oak Ridge | 2023 State TN along with the athleticism and big play ability of Michigan State commit Shannon Blair Shannon Blair 6'0" | 175 lbs | ATH Knox. West | 2022 State TN , make the Rebels a formidable opponent with title aspirations on their mind.
Station Camp, Wilson Central Come Away w/ Big Wins
The Bison of Station Camp have been trying to find their way back to relevance and the 2021 season might be their year as they have now started the year at 2-0 after a big win over Hillsboro, 33-13.
Many did not see this score coming as the Burros sport a few college level prospects along with several other talented players but the Bison wasn’t having any of it as they not only won the game but won it going away.
Station Camp still doesn’t have the college level talent that many other schools around them have but they are a gritty, tough, hard nosed team that takes their attitude from head coach Brent Alexander and applies it to the field, so teams on their schedule should watch out for the Bison this season as they have come to compete!
Opening the 2021 season with a loss wasn’t the way Wilson Central wanted to start their year but they surely bounced back last Friday night as they went head to head with a Lebanon Blue Devil team that has some serious talent, however that didn’t phase the Wildcats as they won the game, 17-13.
It was a battle that had to go to the end before someone was deemed the winner. Both teams fought and battled till the end but credit has to go to the Wildcats defense as they were able to slow down a solid Blue Devils offense, led by juniors Jaylen Abston Jaylen Abston 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Lebanon | 2023 State TN and Anthony Crowell.
Maybe this win over Lebanon will be the spark the Wildcats need to turn their season into a success and earn themselves a spot in postseason play.
Etc. …..
– Henry Co. has started the season at 0-2 after a road loss to Beech last Friday but this is still a good team with their eyes on Chattanooga. The Patriots have had to face two of the best programs in the Middle Tennessee the first two weeks in the Bucs and defending 5A state champs, Summit. It has not been the start they wanted but the Pats are fine and should be playing up to caliber by the end of the season.
– East Hamilton vs. Portland turned out to be the game we predicted as it was a close contest that was not settled till the end where the road Hurricanes came away with the win, 42-34. While the home Panthers did not win, it was a good showing against a very good team that should be in the playoffs by season’s end. It was an experience that the Panthers should learn from and take with them the rest of the season as they have a good team that can do some damage.
– Much like Henry Co. above, the Nolensville Knights have started the 2021 season at 0-2 but they have lost in different fashion compared to the Patriots. Last Friday, Nolensville went down in defeat to Giles Co., 38-35 and while it was a close loss, the Knights are struggling right now as they have gone down to two teams with less talent, especially college level talent. It’s still a long season, so the Knights can get it right but they will need to do so soon as they only have 8 games left to make corrections.
