The Wolves had two rushing touchdowns and a passing score between the 10:13 and 1:54 marks of the third quarter, allowing them to secure a 42-28 district victory.
With the win, Harris-Lake Park improved to 2-2 on the season while the Gaels dropped to 1-3 in their first year of eight-player football.
Austin Gilmore – Harris-Lake Park – RB/LB – 5-11, 180
Back-to-back 7-yard scoring runs by Austin Gilmore in the third helped put plenty of distance between Harris-Lake Park and St. Edmond. Gilmore also had the first points of the game, finding paydirt from eight yards out late in the first quarter.
The 180-pound senior blends power with speed to compliment his fellow skill players very well. He carried the ball 26 times for 139 yards, routinely breaking free of the first tackler to gain extra yardage.
Tyce Gunderson – Harris-Lake Park – QB/LB – 5-10, 165
A returning starter for Harris-Lake Park, Tyce Gunderson showed poise and experience under center. The junior was an effective 8-for-15 passing for 111 yards and a TD while adding a rushing touchdown to his night.
Gunderson remained poised and confident in the pocket while facing pressure, showcasing his skills by avoiding would-be tacklers for big losses. He also hit Caleb Hemphill on a 30-yard scoring strike to put his team up for good early in the third and also finished off a series with a 2-yard plunge into the end zone.
Gavin Eiser – Harris-Lake Park – WR/S – 5-11 – 160
I’m not entirely sure how many times he kicked off, but Harris-Lake Park’s Gavin Eiser routinely had no trouble putting the ball in the end zone for a touchback. Yes, it is a shorter distance in eight-player to do that, but the senior definitely has a powerful leg.
Eiser was also a perfect 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts, which at any level in the state of Iowa, is a huge boost for your team. Being able to rely on someone to successfully have no trouble with those kicks can be the difference between a win and a loss late in the year.
Eiser also had a pair of receptions for 54 yards on the game.
JT Laufersweiler – St. Edmond – QB/DB – 6-0 – 150
Making his first varsity start at quarterback, sophomore JT Laufersweiler showed that the moment wasn’t too big for him. Laufersweiler drove the Gaels down the field early in the second, finishing off a scoring drive with a 7-yard run.
He later pulled his team to within two on a 14-yard TD connection with Isaac Landwehr. Laufersweiler, also a defensive back on the team, threw for 238 yards, ran for 56 and also had a two-point conversion play succeed.
