Baylor Bowen – Lawrence, 6’4”, 180, WR
Bowen has returned to the Lawrence area, this time as a member of the Chesty Lions’ football program. He’s been a breakout player for Lawrence High so far this season. Through two games he’s hauled in 8 catches for 211 yards and one touchdown. His lengthy frame makes him a playmaker on the perimeter. He excels at high pointing the ball, and there aren’t many defensive backs that can out jump him. Bowen should continue to be one of the top targets for the Lions the rest of the year.
Chase Smarsh – Bishop Carroll, 6’0”, 175, QB
Smarsh was an under the radar signal caller heading into the ’21 season, but he is making a name for himself in his first year starting. He’s helped lead the Golden Eagles to two impressive wins, one being over 5A powerhouse Wichita Northwest. In Week 1 against the Grizzlies, he displayed great awareness in the pocket, pinpoint accuracy, and he was able to make plays with his legs. The senior faces a huge test against Derby tomorrow night, but he and the Golden Eagles will be up for the challenge.
Jaylen Burch – Bishop Miege, 5’9”, 170, RB
It’s been a slow start to the ’21 campaign for the Stags, but this senior tailback has been a bright spot for their offense. Burch nearly rushed for 1,000 yards as a junior and he should definitely eclipse that mark this year. He without a doubt has next level talent. Jaylen displays excellent vision, allowing him to gain extra yardage when a play breaks down. He’s also a threat in the passing game, and he fills in well in pass protection.
Keaton Nevins – Nickerson, 5’8”, 180, RB
It can’t be denied that Nevins has not only been one of the top breakout players in Class 3A this year, but also in the entire state. Nevins put together a solid stat line in Week 1, rushing for over 100 yards with two touchdowns. But in Nickerson’s Week 2 tilt against Halstead; Keaton put everyone on notice. The senior exploded for 318 yards on 22 carries and made his way to the end zone four times. The Panthers may have lost the game, but it was an unbelievable performance from this young man.
Jamari Harris – Hillsboro, 5’10”, 190, ATH
Harris has been making plays on both sides of the ball through these first few weeks of the season. At running back, he’s rushed for 200 yards, averaging nearly seven yards a carry with four touchdowns. On defense, Harris is one of the leading sackers in the 2A ranks with four through two games, and he also has nine total tackles. He’s a shifty runner that can make several defenders miss and he is a threat off the edge on defense because of his quickness.
