Here are some defensive performances that caught my attention during the game.
Aden Welcome Fairmont LB
Welcome tipped a pass that led to an interception. On a fourth and short, he stuffed a screen on a fourth down to give the ball back to his offense.
Eli Anderson Eli Anderson 6'0" | 160 lbs | DB Fairmont | 2022 State MN Fairmont DB
Anderson dominated on the offensive side of the ball – scoring three touchdowns – and he got in the end zone on defense too. He came up with a pick-six off Welcome’s tipped ball and returned it for a 50-yard touchdown. Later, he intercepted a throw down the middle with a nice return, but it was called back because of a penalty.
Luke Borowicz Jordan DT
Borowicz made a tackle for a short gain early in the game. Then, he tipped a pass on a bubble screen – leading to an interception. On a fourth-down, he put immediate pressure on the quarterback, forcing a rushed, incomplete pass.
Gavin Rodning Gavin Rodning 6'0" | 180 lbs | LB Fairmont | 2022 State MN Fairmont LB
Rodning made a nice tackle on the inside for a short gain early in the game. Later, he made a tackle for a short gain on a screen. He stuffed an off-tackle run, then combined with defensive lineman Dustin Olson Dustin Olson DL Ottertail Central | 2018 State MN to make a tackle for a short gain. After another tackle for a short gain, he picked off a pass off Oliver Tordsen’s tipped pass. Late in the game, he pressured the quarterback and forced an early throw.
Ben Swanson Ben Swanson ATH Jordan | 2022 State MN Jordan DL
Swanson’s quick penetration into the backfield slowed down the back so his teammates could make the tackle. Later, he made a tackle for loss near the goal line.
Hank Artz Fairmont DL
Early in the game, Artz made a tackle that resulted in a short gain up the middle. Later he stuffed another inside run for a short gain. His inside pass rush forced the quarterback into Artz’s teammates, who would get credit for the sack. He was in the quarterback’s face one more time, and his pressure forced a quick throw and incompletion.
Marcus Karsky Jordan LB
Karsky read a tight end screen and made a tackle for a five-yard loss. Later, he defended a deep out and knocked down the pass. Against the run, he made a tackle for loss on the inside.
Owen Montreuil Jordan DB
Montreuil’s best stretch of plays came when the defense was backed up in the shadow of their goal line. He prevented a touchdown by deflecting a pass in the end zone. On the next play, he had good coverage on another pass play near the goal line, forcing an incompletion. On fourth down, he had tight coverage on a third straight play, forcing a turnover on downs.
