For two and a half quarters, the Bixby Spartans looked like they couldn’t be touched, much like the last 37 games. However, the Spartans would have to hold off a furious Jenks rally to get out of Jenks with a 23-15 win, extending their winning streak to 38 and giving them their third straight win over the Trojans.
Bixby got the scoring going on their second possession. They went three and out on their first but a Jenks fumble on the punt would give the Spartans the ball at the Jenks 36-yard line. Bixby would quickly score on a Christian Burke Christian Burke 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Bixby | 2022 State OK pop pass to Dylan Hasz Dylan Hasz 6'0" | DB Bixby | 2023 State OK . After a good Jenks drive ended with a wide left field goal, Bixby would score a few plays later on a Braylin Presley Braylin Presley 5'9" | RB Bixby | 2022 State OK 74-yard touchdown run. The Spartans added a 34-yard field goal by Connor Nolan Connor Nolan 6'2" | 170 lbs | K Bixby | 2022 State OK in the second quarter gave them a 16-0 halftime lead. Three first half turnovers limited what Jenks was able to do on offense.
The second half was a different story. The Spartans would score again on a Burke touchdown pass to Jakeb Snyder Jakeb Snyder 5'10" | 170 lbs | WR Bixby | 2023 State OK from 15 yards out to give them a 23-0 lead. However, after Jenks went three and out, Presley would fumble away a Jenks punt in which he appeared to give a fair catch signal and was hit by a Jenks defender. The Trojans would recover and take advantage of the turnover, scoring on a Jaiden Carroll Jaiden Carroll 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Jenks | 2023 State OK one yard touchdown run.
After a lengthy Jenks drive that took over five minutes of fourth quarter time, the Trojans scored on an Ike Owens QB sneak with just under four minutes left. Bixby would have to punt on their next possession and Jenks was in business. They got the ball to midfield with 90 seconds left but the Spartans’ pass rush again caused havoc and forced an Owens fumble and the Spartans recovered. With only one timeout, the Trojans ran out of time and the four turnovers doomed Jenks’ bid of snapping what is becoming one of the longest winning streaks in state history.

TURNING POINT
Unfortunately for the Trojans, the turning point came right at the end as Jenks had a chance to tie the game and potentially send it into overtime. Jenks got the ball to midfield but then on the very next play they fumbled it away and Bixby took it over. The Spartans would be able to run the clock out and get out of Allan Trimble Stadium with another win. We thought that the turning point would have been when Bixby took a 23-0 advantage halfway thru the third quarter but hats off to the Trojans for not only staying in the game, but having a shot to continue it and send it to overtime in the final minutes.

We could have gone with the defense because the Spartans were flying around like mad men. We could have just said the front seven for the Spartans but we’re going with the Oklahoma State commit. Senior running back

was once again on top of his game with the lights shining brightest. Presley ran for nearly 130 yards on 15 carries and the 74-yard touchdown run. He was also Bixby’s leading receiver with 60 yards on five catches. Presley was the consistent big-play threat for the Spartans on offense and as he’s done many times over the last two years, he took his game to another level in one of the biggest games of the year.
QUOTABLE
Bixby Head Coach Loren Montgomery On His Team’s Defense
“We’ve got some really good guys and we’ve got some really good depth. We’ve seen that all through the spring and summer. It was kind of a game that came down to depth and that was a big thing for us. I think we’ll have a chance at having a really good defense once we figure out what our identity is. But it was huge to get some turnovers and takeaways. I’m just so proud of our guys for hanging in there and getting tested early like this.”
WHAT’S NEXT
BIXBY: VS Stillwater – Week Three
Bixby will have week two off to rest up and get ready for a top five clash in 6A-2 and a potential state championship preview. After a bye week, the Spartans will host Stillwater in week three. This game was highly anticipated last year but was cancelled due to Covid. The Spartans and Pioneers met in the 2018 and 2019 state championship games with the Spartans prevailing in each. Stillwater kicked off their season tonight on the road with a win over Edmond Santa Fe.
JENKS: AT Union – Week Two
The Trojans will have to bounce back quickly because they go from one rival to THE rival as they’ll go on the road next week to face Union. Jenks beat Union 28-0 in last year’s regular season meeting but the regular season series has been dead even in the last ten meetings. Each team is 5-5 in the last decade and they’ll meet on Friday. Union improved to 2-0 on the season tonight with a win over Broken Arrow.
