In week 1, the Papillion – La Vista South Titans found themselves on the losing side of a thriller 20-point comeback game against the cross-town rival Monarchs. This week they found themselves in an 18-point deficit against Lincoln East and an offense that looked like it was starting to heat up. Noah Walter came out dealing finding RB Jaelyn Welch for an 83-yard catch and run, and then found rangy receiver Malachi Coleman Malachi Coleman 6'5" | 195 lbs | WR Lincoln East | 2023 State NE for two long touchdowns. The Titan offense was having trouble finding their footing early and defensively; their front seven was able to apply pressure to Walters and were able to shut down the run game but had still given up some big pass plays. The O-Line for both offenses had their hands full with a slew of experienced and crafty defensive lineman and athletic edge rushers (East: Cappos, Coleman, Crayton, Hayden Boyd Hayden Boyd 6'3" | 260 lbs | DL Lincoln East | 2022 State NE , Dash Baumann PLVS: Jimmy Rosenthal, Keegan Meehan, Matthew Scarpello, Nick Ripple.) and it caused for their QBs to scramble and extend plays. In what looked like a runaway game for the Spartans, the Titans began to march back slowly behind the steady running of Devyn Jones, the playmaking of Ian Meddeck, and a gutsy performance by QB Brady Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick would throw for 140 yards and run for 140 yards as he found various ways to keep the offense rolling. On the defense, Jimmy Rosenthal gave a tremendous effort racking up 9 tackles, 3 TFLs, 3 sacks, and an interception helping the Titan defense hold the deadly East passing attack at bay in the fourth quarter. The Spartans saw costly drops cut their momentum in the second half and keep them relatively stagnant. After a touchdown pass to Meddeck, rushing touchdowns by Devyn Jones and Brady Fitzpatrick, PLVS found themselves trailing 25-28 with a chance to win the game after a stagnant East drive. Fitzpatrick and the offense were able to march down the field and cap their comeback with a Fitzpatrick to Jones pass. After a Lincoln East turnover to end the game, the Titans found themselves amongst the PLVS faithful celebrating their victory. This was definitely one of the most fun games I’ve seen in person. Papillion La Vista South will travel to Gretna to take on the red-hot Dragons. Lincoln East will march to Norfolk and look to get back in the win column.
Final: Papillion La Vista South 32 – Lincoln East 28
Top Ranked Players:
Noah Walters Noah Walters 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Lincoln East | 2022 State NE , 6’0″ 195 lbs – QB Lincoln East
I was impressed by Walters’ performance against PLVS. He is a quarterback I have been very confident in, and he did many things that I like. It is pointless to think about ’what-ifs,’ but a couple of drops on key downs could have provided a different outcome (and possibly 400 yards passing) to this game for the Spartans. Also, his toughness really stood out as he took big hits all night and continued to sling it.
Malachi Coleman Malachi Coleman 6'5" | 195 lbs | WR Lincoln East | 2023 State NE , 6’5″ 175 lbs – WR Lincoln East
Going into this game, I was aware of Coleman’s talent and potential as a receiver, and I expected great performance from him. He definitely delivered on that with two long touchdown hauls, but I was not expecting to see such a defensive performance from him. He got to the quarterback twice, caused a fumble, and batted down some passes—elite overall athlete.
Stephan Adeymi, 5’10″ 170 lbs – WR Papillion La Vista South
Adeyemi is a dynamic and reliable receiver that seemed to make his plays when the team needed them most. You can tell he has been working hard throughout the offseason; his footwork and routes look crisper.
Devyn Jones, 6’ 205 lbs – RB Papillion La Vista South
Devyn Jones ran extremely hard on Friday night. He showed the ability to be a workhorse back and help establish the run game. With 96 yards rushing 2 touchdowns, one being the game-winner, he had a pretty good night against a formidable East defense.
Lincoln East Takeaways:
- Drops were killing the passing game. Some came on critical conversion downs and late in the game when Papillion was making a comeback.
- Despite the drops, this passing attack is lethal. They have several players who can catch and rack up some YAC and players who can take the top off the defense.
- The OL struggled to mesh. There were several plays where it seemed like Walters was forced out of the pocket instantly. He was sacked 6 times and had pressure in his face throughout the whole game.
- The run game was almost nonexistent. The defense made it hard to move the ball on the ground.
- Secondary can hold its own, but the front seven needs to stiffen up and work on stopping the run.
Papillion La Vista South Takeaways:
- They have tons of players that can ball. Specifically, Jimmy Rosenthal and Keegan Meehan were two names I kept hearing all night. They were pivotal in pulling off their comeback victory.
- If Brady Fitzpatrick develops his passing game, he could be a real Dual-Threat QB. He has a few mechanical and decision-making issues that should iron out with experience, but he could
- Henri Supenski is definitely a player to keep an eye out for. Could be a top ’23 OL prospect in the state.
