There have been some outstanding performances so far, but this article is going to highlight the ones that have put together consistent elite-level play since week one. So enough with the introduction, let’s dive into my MVPs as we enter week five.
Dylan Bisson Dylan Bisson 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Mountain Island Charter School | 2022 State NC , 5’11″ 170, Mount Island Charter
There are many things we can disagree on, however, having Dylan Bisson Dylan Bisson 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Mountain Island Charter School | 2022 State NC at the top of this list is not one of them. Bisson has been on a mission from the start and he has picked apart every defense trying to get in the way. On top of leading the entire state in passing yards, Bisson also broke the Gaston County single-game passing record last Friday when he threw for 541 yards and four touchdowns against Union Academy. He has led Mount Island Charter to a 3-0 record while tallying up 1302 total yards, 14 total touchdowns, and only three interceptions. If those stats don’t blow you away, maybe this will: Bisson is completing 80% of his passes while averaging 27.6 yards per completion. These are jaw-dropping numbers as Bisson is putting together an unbelievable senior season. Coaches and Scouts are talking and we will be keeping a close eye on him as the season goes.
Wesley Grimes Wesley Grimes 6'3" | 180 lbs | WR Millbrook | 2022 State NC , 6’3″ 180, Millbrook High School
Wesley Grimes Wesley Grimes 6'3" | 180 lbs | WR Millbrook | 2022 State NC is a name that almost everyone knows by now. He is our top-ranked WR in the senior class, and so far this season he has without a doubt backed that ranking up. Grimes has gone over 100 yards receiving in all four games while averaging 25.2 yards per catch. He is phenomenal after the catch, and if a defender doesn’t tackle him right away, he is more often than not taking it to the house. Grimes is leading all WR’s in the state with 10 touchdown catches through four games. He is the ultimate weapon for a QB because he is so good at high-pointing the football. Wesley Grimes Wesley Grimes 6'3" | 180 lbs | WR Millbrook | 2022 State NC is showing all of us why the University of Wake Forest is so enamored with him.
Marqies Mccombs, 5’10″ 180, Chase High School
Marqies Mccombs has made my weekly top performers list a couple of times now, as he leads all running backs with 955 yards through four games. Mccombs has put together a sensational start to his junior season, averaging 11.8 yards per carry and 16 rushing touchdowns, beating out the next closest running back by 6 touchdowns. The fascinating part about Mccombs is that he has succeeded with low volume and high volume touches. Week two, 11 carries for 168 yards and two touchdowns compared to week three where he had 33 carries for 253 yards and four touchdowns. Mccombs has run all over his opponents and is a big reason why Chase High School is off to a 4-0 start to the season.
Devin Gardner Devin Gardner 5'11" | 240 lbs | RB Harrells Christian | 2022 State NC , 5’11″ 240, Harrells Christian Academy
Devin Gardner Devin Gardner 5'11" | 240 lbs | RB Harrells Christian | 2022 State NC , another running back putting together a special senior season. Gardner has run for 804 yards on 65 carries to go along with 10 rushing touchdowns. Right now Gardner is the 8th ranked running back in this senior class but that is going to change very quickly because of the season that he is having. Gardner has outperformed his previous performance each time this season, starting with 175 and jumping up to 370 rushing yards this past week. As I have said before, he is one of the most unique backs I have scouted due to his combination of size and speed.
Beady Waddell V Beady Waddell V 6'0" | 210 lbs | LB West Mecklenburg | 2024 State NC , 5’11″ 190, West Mecklenburg High School
Beady Waddell V Beady Waddell V 6'0" | 210 lbs | LB West Mecklenburg | 2024 State NC is a very talented sophomore linebacker, that has come out the gates on fire. Waddell has all the makings of an elite-level linebacker with his quick burst and excellent patience. So far this season he has 44 total tackles, 34 solo tackles to go along with 8 tackles for a loss. That last stat is what sticks out to me, it shows he is having a clear impact on the game. His ability to get past the offensive line and disrupt the quarterback is becoming more and more evident. Waddell is the top-ranked linebacker in our rankings for the sophomore class and I don’t see anyone taking that crown from him with the way he is playing.
Kaevon Freshwater Kaevon Freshwater 6'5" | 225 lbs | DL Northeastern | 2022 State NC , 6’5″ 225, Northeastern High School
Kaevon Freshwater Kaevon Freshwater 6'5" | 225 lbs | DL Northeastern | 2022 State NC has been phenomenal on the defensive line, causing all kinds of problems for the offensive line. At 6’5″ 225, Freshwater has a very strong presence and is improving his skills as a pass rusher. That is the main reason why he is on this list, his ability to rush the quarterback has taken a tremendous jump. Freshwater has 8 sacks on the year, leading all other pass rushers in the state. The crazy part of this is that Freshwater has only played in three games, averaging over 2.5 sacks per game. He also has 26 total tackles and 18 solo tackles, a great start to his senior season.
