#TNHSFB: Week 4 Recap/Top Stories
In this article:
It was another big week of high school football action here in Tennessee and Prep Red Zone is here to recap all the top stories and more!
Mustangs Are Pushing For State’s Best
One of the more impressive teams thus far in the 2021 season has been the Lipscomb Academy Mustangs and last Friday they demolished another opponent by defeating Pulaski Academy from Arkansas, 64-28 and now they move forward as not only one of the best teams in the state but maybe the top one overall.
This is a loaded Mustangs team with tons of talent on both sides of the ball, led Boston College commit Alex Broome Alex Broome 5'8" | 190 lbs | RB Lipscomb Academy | 2022 State TN and quarterback Luther Richesson Luther Richesson 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Lipscomb Academy | 2022 State TN , who threw for eight touchdowns in last Friday’s win. The Mustangs have so much depth this season that several players aren’t under the spotlight currently but are key pieces, helping this team win. Guys like Coleman Baker Coleman Baker 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Lipscomb Academy | 2022 State TN , Dylan Wroblewski Dylan Wroblewski 6'1" | 190 lbs | WR Lipscomb Academy | 2023 State TN , Luke Westerman, Adam Walker Adam Walker 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Lipscomb Academy | 2022 TN are just a few among many others that are talented prospects but don’t get the clout as others do.
It’s not just the offense either, it’s the Mustangs defense that has been playing at a high level too. The entire team right now is playing with ultimate confidence and will not be intimidated by anyone they face off against. The only thing right now that could slow this Lipscomb Academy team down is injuries.
We still have a long season to go, so many things can change and evolve but this Mustangs team is legit and poised to leave this 2021 season with a state title.
Station Camp Keeps Things Rolling
– The Bison have been a pleasant surprise this year and last week they kept their undefeated season going, moving to 4-0 as they defeated cross town rival Gallatin, 21-7. This was another close, hard fought game by the Bison who just seem to keep finding ways to win. Playing this brand of football can bold well for Station Camp as they go deeper into the season and possibly the playoffs as well continue to give this confidence, thinking they can win each game.
The Bison are in prime position for a postseason spot but they must continue to play at a high level and compete each and every game. The biggest strength to this team thus far is the Bison defense that is holding opponent’s to eight points a game and getting off the field on third downs. Key pieces to this salty defense includes Aden Murray, John Wilson and junior two way talent Dallin Steele Dallin Steele 6'6" | 255 lbs | DL Lipscomb Acad. | 2023 State TN . These three along with several others are clamping down opponents and keeping their offense and team in games.
It will get tougher for the Bison as their schedule provides tough foes upcoming in Mt. Juliet, Portland and Green Hill but the Bison appear locked in at the moment and ready to face all comers.
Several Good Teams Sit at 4-0
– A close, hard fought region game between Tullahoma and Marshall Co. went down to the 4th quarter where the home Wildcats came away with a 28-20 victory and remained undefeated on the season. This is a region rivalry game that both teams look forward to playing each season and this year’s version did not disappoint. It was the Wildcats offensive line and rushing attack that proved to be the difference over the road Tigers.
– Pope Prep is a force to watch on the D2-Class AAA level as they moved to 4-0 on the season after a commanding, 56-38 win over a talented Independence team last Friday. Junior quarterback Kenny Minchey Kenny Minchey 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Pope Prep | 2023 State TN has been nothing but spectacular so far this year and very efficient as well. He has a big time target in junior wideout Colin Cook Colin Cook 6'3" | 185 lbs | WR Pope John Paul | 2023 State TN , who had a stellar game against the Eagles with 11 catches for 165 yards and 4 touchdowns.
The Knights have an offense that can score in bunches but also lead their team to a possible shot at the D2-Class AAA state title. The defense has played ok but if they can step things up, the Knights become a formidable opponent that could be hard to beat.
– Two weeks in a row, Bradley Central has defeated area rivals as last Friday the Bears beat McMinn Co., 44-28 and the previous week they upset a talented Cleveland team, 28-14. The Bears were expected to take a step back after having to replace several key starters, including multiple current college players. They have instead plugged in new guys and kept the train rolling.
The Bears have a great shot to maintain this winning streak and put themselves in a great spot when it comes to postseason action. They do have big contests at the end of the year with Farragut, Rhea Co. and Maryville but the Bears appear to have the defense and the confidence to compete with anybody right now.
– South Gibson remains undefeated at 4-0 after beating Kirby last week, 21-6 and the Hornets remain a sneaky, strong team that their opponents need to watch out for and a team that could position themselves just right for a deep postseason run.
The Hornets have big games looming with Henry Co., Haywood and Lausanne but they should be ready for the fight that it’s gonna have to take to beat those three. It’s been an impressive season so far for South Gibson but we will have to watch over the coming weeks to see how special it can be.
Etc …..
– The biggest game of the week last Friday was no doubt Alcoa vs. Maryville and the game didn’t disappoint. The Rebels from Maryville took an early, double digit lead but in the 2nd half, Alcoa made a run and brought the game to within three. Maryville ended up winning the game, 30-27 but it showed that the Tornadoes of Alcoa are legit and have the talent to compete with the best in this state.
Maryville will have a tougher road to winning their 6A state title but will still be a favorite. Alcoa was already seen as the Class 3A team to beat and after last Friday, there is no question in my mind that the Tornadoes “will” win the 3A championship yet again this season.
– People need to start paying attention to Lausanne out of West Tennessee because this team is not only talented but loaded to the point where they could become D2-Class AA state champs by season’s end. Led by star junior quarterback Brock Glenn Brock Glenn 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Lausanne | 2023 State TN , athletic back Craig Cunningham II Craig Cunningham II 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB Lausanne | 2022 State TN and stout O-line with stalwarts up front like Donte Gillard Donte Gillard 6'4" | 320 lbs | OL Lausanne | 2022 State TN and junior Tyler Bell Tyler Bell 6'3" | 295 lbs | OL Lausanne | 2023 State TN , the Lynx have the horses on both sides of the ball to dominate their schedule and walk into postseason play as a top contender. They very well might have just beat their toughest team on the schedule in Bartlett as the rest of their schedule is very favorable. This team will only get better and could be quite scary by the end of the year.
