Region play has officially begun, and this week’s slate of games have a lot on the line this week. Let’s check out the best matchups of Week 6 in Mississippi!
Ocean Springs vs D’Iberville
Both teams enter this regional matchup undefeated, but more is on the line this week. With this game taking place on the coast, year long bragging rights are won Friday night. Last year, D’Iberville took the game 27-24, but a new high powered Ocean Springs offense comes into play this season. Quarterback Bray Hubbard Bray Hubbard 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Ocean Springs | 2023 State MS has been absolutely electric and no team has found a way to slow him down yet, but this D’Iberville defense has held teams to season lows all year. Exciting matchup with a ton of playoff implications in it.
Cleveland Central vs Lake Cormorant
Cleveland Central (2-2) takes on Lake Cormorant (3-2) in a regional game that could ultimately determine the winner of the region later in the year. Cleveland Central has had a dominant rushing attack this season, but has also found their way into establishing a good passing game to balance things out. Lake Cormorant, led by quarterback Telvin Amos Telvin Amos 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Lake Cormorant | 2022 State MS , has been one of the highest scoring offenses in 5A. The Gators defense has some studs on it as well, so expect this game to stay close until the very end.
Harrison Central vs Biloxi
Undefeated Harrison Central has been on a roll this season, dominating every opponent they have played so far. In-region rival Biloxi walks into this one with a 1-3 record on the season, with a defense that has been struggling all year. With big time players like Deljay Bailey Deljay Bailey 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Petal | 2023 State MS on their side, don’t count Biloxi out of this one yet. Harrison Central should enter as a favorite, but watch out for Biloxi to sell out to stop this offensive attack.
Hernando vs Southaven
This 5A matchup has been one that we have been looking forward to for a while. After some early season struggles, Hernando will look to bounce back in a big way against a region opponent in Southaven. This Southaven defense is loaded with star players that will give Southern Miss commit Zach Wilcke Zach Wilcke 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Hernando | 2022 State MS some trouble. The Chargers have played teams close all season, so look for Hernando to keep this thing within a possession and let Wilcke do what he does best.
Raleigh vs Crystal Springs
Both teams entering with one loss each, this game has some huge implications for 3A. Raleigh’s Suntarrine Perkins will face off with Crystal Springs’ Trevion Williams Trevion Williams 6'5" | 250 lbs | LB Crystal Springs | 2022 State MS , creating a battle between two of the state’s most intriguing athletes. Raleigh has shown the ability to get the ball in their best playmakers’ hands, while the Crystal Springs defense has allowed 14 or less in their past 3 games. Exciting region matchup here that could ultimately determine the winner of the region.
Tupelo vs Oxford
This north Mississippi matchup features two of the best teams in the region. Tupelo enters red hot with a perfect 5-0 record on the season, while Oxford enters 3-2 coming off a rebound win last week. The common opponent between these two has been Lafayette, who Tupelo beat 5-3 in a season opener and Oxford lost to 34-23. Both these teams feature stout defenses with competent offenses. Expecting this one to be a defensive game with low scoring and a whole lot of big hits.
Meridian vs Pearl
Meridian and Pearl have always been two of the best teams in the state, and this week we get to see them face off in a region matchup. Both teams enter with one loss under their belt, but have posted huge numbers in every game since. Pearl looks to have one of the deepest and most talented defenses in the state, while Meridian has been hard to stop on offense. Pearl sure does know how to run the ball though and will give Meridian trouble on the ground. Looking at a ton of talent to be on the field at the same time in this one.
Sumrall vs Columbia
Coming into this game with an electric passing attack that has given a lot of teams trouble, Sumrall will take on a tough Columbia defense led by Alabama commit Jaheim Oatis Jaheim Oatis 6'4" | 345 lbs | DL Columbia | 2022 State MS . Columbia has allowed 33 total points all season, while Sumrall has scored a huge total of 154 in four games. This game has a ton on the line for both 4A powers. Will be exciting to see how Columbia defends this Sumrall offense that nobody has seemed to figure out yet.
