Jake Barrera, Artesia: Barrera was a central figure in arguably the week’s most exciting game. He opened the scoring for Artesia against Deming with a 47-yard TD run on the Bulldogs’ second play from scrimmage. He later added a 1-yard TD plunge to give Artesia a 30-27 lead before scoring the eventual game-winning TD with less than a minute remaining.
Daniel Ayala Daniel Ayala 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB West Mesa | 2022 State NM , West Mesa: Ayala enjoyed his best game of the season in West Mesa’s 26-16 triumph over Sandia, completing 13-of-17 passes for 278 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Mustangs won for the first time after three losses to start the season.
Broden Cahoon, Farmington: Cahoon sparked another Farmington shutout with a Pick-6 touchdown as the Scorpions rolled past Aztec, 54-0.
Branden Castillo, Cibola: Castillo joined in the fun against Eldorado with 10 receptions for 181 yards, scoring the go-ahead TD midway through the third quarter.
Aden Chavez Aden Chavez 6'5" | 210 lbs | QB Cibola | 2023 State NM , Cibola: Chavez is accumulating Player of the Year numbers, and Eldorado is the latest program to succumb to his talents. Chavez was 29-of-47 passing for 413 yards and 4 TDs in Cibola’s 35-21 victory over the Eagles.
Deven Dyer, La Cueva: Led La Cueva’s defense in the win over Volcano Vista with 6 tackles, 2 TFL, 5 QB pressures, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries and TD on a 26-yard scoop and score. Dyer recorded the quadruple on the same play: sack, tackle for loss, fumble recovery and touchdown.
Damian Gallegos, West Las Vegas: The top RB on one of the state’s most surprising teams, Gallegos scored 5 touchdowns – 3 rushing + 2 receiving – and finished with 244 all-purpose yards (80-yard kickoff return) in WLV’s lopsided win over Espanola Valley.
Mikah Gutierrez Mikah Gutierrez 5'8" | 160 lbs | RB Centennial | 2023 State NM , Centennial: Gutierrez followed up his exceptional performance last week against Sandia with a 150+ yards rushing and 4 TD performance against city rival Mayfield. The Hawks posted an emphatic 56-23 victory.
Logan Howell, Piedra Vista: The Panthers QB threw for 2 touchdowns (both to Brian Monclova) and ran for another in Piedra Vista’s impressive 34-7 victory over Four Corners rival Kirtland Central.
Chris Johnson Chris Johnson 5'9" | 135 lbs | WR West Mesa | 2023 State NM , West Mesa: Johnson propelled West Mesa to its first win of the season with 7 receptions for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Mustangs beat Sandia, 26-16.
Nathan Lopez Nathan Lopez 5'5" | 135 lbs | WR Cibola | 2022 State NM , Cibola: The speedy Lopez is a 5-foot-6 package of dynamite. He was Aden Chavez Aden Chavez 6'5" | 210 lbs | QB Cibola | 2023 State NM ’s favorite receiver against Eldorado and finished with 14 receptions for 157 yards and four touchdowns, one of them an 85-yard kickoff return.
D’Sean Martinez, Pojoaque Valley: Martinez was Pojoaque Valley’s best player in the loss to Highland, amassing 158 receiving yards on offense and 10 tackles on defense.
Tyler Martinez Tyler Martinez 6'1" | 180 lbs | DB Volcano Vista | 2022 State NM , Volcano Vista: Even though the Hawks lost to La Cueva, Martinez had 9 tackles, 5 TFL, 1 QB hurry, 1 sack, 1 safety and 2 rushing touchdowns for Volcano Vista as he excelled on both sides of the ball.
Martell Mora Martell Mora 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB Santa Fe High | 2022 State NM , Santa Fe: Mora continues to post Player of the Year numbers. This time, he rushed for 261 yards on just 18 carries and scored five touchdowns in the Demons’ 48-28 victory over Capital. Together with the win over Sat. Michael’s last week, Santa Fe has swept it city rivals for the first time in 13 years.
Javyn Morales Javyn Morales 5'10" | 155 lbs | RB Goddard | 2023 State NM , Goddard: Arguably the fastest and most exciting player in the state lived up to the billing in Friday night’s win over El Paso (TX) Austin, rushing for 137 yards on 10 carries and amassing 377 all-purpose yards.
C.J. Perea, West Las Vegas: Perea has emerged as one of the top freshmen in the state (Class of 2025), leading WLV to a 4-0 record. He completed 12-of-21 passes for 172 yards and 4 TDs in a 64-14 rout of Espanola Valley. He also ran for a score.
Josh Perry Josh Perry 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB Cleveland | 2023 State NM , Cleveland: Perry led the way for Cleveland’s juggernaut offense by scoring four touchdowns, three in the first half when the Storm grabbed a 35-0 lead over Las Cruces.
Mason Posa, La Cueva: Set the night’s defensive tone for the La Cueva defense with a 65-yard interception return for a TD in the first quarter against Volcano Vista, one of two interceptions for him.
Dylan Quartieri Dylan Quartieri 6'1" | QB Raton | 2022 State NM , Raton: Despite Raton playing without RB Cayden Walton Cayden Walton 5'9" | 180 lbs | RB Raton | 2023 State NM and most of the game without Matthew Quartieri Matthew Quartieri 6'3" | 215 lbs | WR Raton | 2022 State NM , Dylan led the Tigers offense to 44 points in a rout of Tucumcari. Through 4 games, he has thrown for 689 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Matthew Romero Matthew Romero 5'11" | 160 lbs | RB Moriarty | 2023 State NM , Moriarty: Romero led a balanced and dominant Moriarty rushing attack with 94 yards in the Pintos’ 41-0 victory over Grants. Moriarty amassed 286 rushing yards with three players over 50 yards.
Caleb Sanchez, Piedra Vista: Two rushing touchdowns in the Panthers’ big win over Kirtland Central.
Ryan Sharpe Ryan Sharpe QB Bloomfield | 2023 State NM , Bloomfield: The Bobcats QB is quickly developing into one of the top signal caller sin Class 4A. Against Albuquerque Academy, he threw for three TDs to lead Bloomfield to a key victory.
Diego Snell-Martinez Diego Snell-Martinez 170 lbs | RB Bloomfield | 2022 State NM , Bloomfield: Snell-Martinez keyed Bloomfield’s strong ground game against Albuquerque Academy with nearly 100 yards rushing. Bloomfield chewed up large chunks of the clock in the second half thank to time-consuming drives.
Kaden Trevino Kaden Trevino 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR Hobbs | 2023 State NM , Hobbs: Trevino ignited Hobbs’ shutout victory over Lovington by scoring two first quarter touchdowns on a 3-yard run and a 7-yard reception on a pass from QB Colton Graham Colton Graham 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB Hobbs | 2022 State NM .
Marco Ybarra Marco Ybarra 5'10" | 190 lbs | RB St. Pius X | 2022 State NM , St. Pius X: Our reigning Player of the Week established a new school single game rushing record with 327 yards against Taos Saturday afternoon. The fact he accomplished the feat in near 100-degree temperatures is even more impressive.
