After an underwhelming season last year, the War Eagles are much improved this year and off to an excellent 3-1 start. Like every team, the War Eagles have dealt with some Covid concerns, but they appear to be playing great football right now as we head towards conference play.
Here are a few South Forsyth players to know about for the rest of the season…
Nathan Efobi Nathan Efobi 6'4" | 285 lbs | DL South Forsyth | 2023 State GA – Defensive Line
One of the top 2023 defensive line prospects in the state, the 6-foot-3 285-pounder has been tough to handle this season for opposing offensive linemen. He’s been double-teamed often but has still managed to make a giant impact and lead a defense that has given up 10 or less points in the last two games. He’s strong at the point of attack and can closes those running lanes in a hurry. He’s big, active, and he’s only getting better. He’s using his hands better and becoming more fundamentally and technically sound the more he plays. His best football is ahead of him, and that’s a very good thing for the South Forsyth defense who will have to line up against some impressive offenses in region play. Efobi has made 12 tackles and one sack so far this season.
Ty Watkins Ty Watkins 6'3" | 220 lbs | QB South Forsyth | 2023 State GA – Quarterback
One of the top sleeper 2023 QBs in North Georgia, Watkins is off to a strong start to his junior season in his first year as a starter. He’s lead a potent offense so far, leading the War Eagles to 30+ points in every game played this season. The junior signal caller has led the way through the air with his 650 passing yards and 4 passing touchdowns. He’s done a nice job of pushing the ball down the field and getting the ball in his playmaker’s hands. He throws well on the run, throws with some zip, and is showing more and more leadership as the season moves along. A big, thick QB at 6-foot-2 215-pounds, Watkins is trying to make more plays with his feet, and did so during their big 30-7 win over Central Gwinnett. Watkins found the end-zone twice this past weekend, and that’s something we might see more and more of as the season moves along.
Josh Nelson – ATH
One of the top overall athletes in the region, Nelson is one of the fastest players in the entire state. An incredible two-way player, Nelson has elite speed and uses it to his advantage as both a defensive back and a receiver. The junior athlete is an every down defensive back on defense who will occasionally, more and more, turn around and play some receiver. As a defender, Nelson has intercepted two passes so far this year and returned them for 117 yards. If he’s got his hands on the ball, nobody is going to catch him. He’s also made 17 total tackles from the secondary. As a receiver, Nelson has used his game-changing speed to haul in 8 passes for 239 yards (29.9 ypc) and two touchdowns. He’s incredibly dangerous and a big-play waiting to happen. Look for him to push for All-Region status at the end of the season.
Chris Nelson – WR
Like his brother, Chris Nelson is one of the fastest and most explosive players in the entire state. Another track star, Nelson has game-changing speed and has been a reliable, speedy option at receiver this season. Nelson has caught 10 passes so far this season for 220 yards and one touchdown. He’s quick, shifty, and explosive. He’s not the biggest guy, but he can absolutely fly and can get behind defenses with ease. He’s also a threat to take a quick screen pass the distance if given any type of space to run. The junior a giant weapon for Watkins and the War Eagle offense, so look for them to continue feeding him the ball to showcase his elite speed and explosiveness.
