Here are 4 of the best matchups in the Metro Detroit area.
Games to Watch
(3-1) Brother Rice @ (3-1) Catholic Central – This is one of the most deeply rooted rivalries in the country, and there are some big things on the line for this matchup. For the first time in the rivalries history, Catholic Central has won 6 straight, though I believe this Brother Rice team is the best we’ve seen in about 6 years. Both teams are insanely talented, with Brother Rice being led by shifty WR Cole Lacanaria Cole Lacanaria 5'8" | 140 lbs | WR Brother Rice | 2022 MI and punishing LB Brayden Willis. Catholic Central is led by Saginaw Valley commit WR Raid Zerki Raid Zerki 5'10" | 165 lbs | WR Orchard Lake St. Mary's | 2022 MI and LB Baechler Houser.
(1-3) Avondale @ (0-4) Ferndale – Not a good start to the season for either team. How I see it, both teams are fighting for their playoff hopes. It’s hard for me to say, but for Avondale, their offense just hasn’t gotten going and the defense is not looking good. They have some very good young talent though, primarily in ’24 QB Tyler Herzog, among others. Ferndale on the other hand looks like they’ve dropped way off, though they’re also starting some young talent. Let’s see if one of these teams can build some momentum heading into the second half.
(1-3) Utica Eisenhower @ (3-2) Grosse Pointe South – Led by #1 recruit in the state William Johnson William Johnson 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB Brighton | 2021 MI , Grosse Pointe South looks to better their record heading into some tough games. They’ve lost 2 straight to Romeo and Stevenson, and it’s going to be a significant skid if they lose 3 straight. As for Eisenhower, it’s a rough start and they’ll come into this one as an underdog. WR Ethan Barker is a great player, and he’ll have the opportunity to raise his stock against one of the best corners in the country.
(3-1) Chippewa Valley @ (4-0) Romeo – This battle of heavyweight should be extremely exciting. Romeo has statement wins against Grosse Pointe South, and Dakota, while Chippewa Valley has a very impressive win over Catholic Central. Chippewa Valley is led by two big boys in OT Zach Allison Zach Allison 6'4" | 240 lbs | DL Chippewa Valley | 2022 MI and 6’4 TE Tyler Buchholtz. Romeo on the other hand has spectacular talent in SS Caleb Youngblood, who is also an all-state wrestler. This should be a great Friday matchup.
