Benjamin Russell High School has held up very well to the Pelham Panthers, particularly on defense, by preventing big players from making plays and disrupting gaps with the help of linebackers and the secondary unit. Benjamin Russell’s defense was extraordinary, causing a fumble, and only allowing 2 of 11 third down conversions, which gave Pelham only an 18.2% conversion rate on third down, which was really huge throughout the whole game. With those stats from Benjamin Russell Defense, it gave them the opportunity to turn the game for a little while, which was very critical, without a doubt, when it came to finishing up the game.
Defense
The Wildcats’ defense was all over the place Friday night, and there were some serious playmakers all over the field that helped the defense handle the Pelham Panthers as much as they could. The defensive line was putting a lot of pressure on the Pelham High School quarterback with a total of five quarterback hurries in the game that caused some disruption in the plays for the Panthers. Starting off with Gavyn Vickers, a defensive lineman for Benjamin Russell High School, he had a very solid impact on the defense for the Wildcats. Vickers was very fast and explosive coming off the ball with great hands and pursued the quarterback, which allowed an interception to happen by Ty Williams. The Wildcats’ defensive line put on a show against the Panthers. Zy Owens is another player that puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback in the backfield with two quarterback hurries of his own. Owen controlled every offensive lineman for the Panthers with his quickness and the ability to use his hands underneath blocks.
Gavyn Vickers, DL-Vegas is a very strong, fast, and explosive defense of lineman. Vickers comes off the ball very violently under the chest of any offensive lineman in his way. Vickers also shoots and they get really well for the Wildcats, and he also never lets up on any run chasing the quarterback or anyone with the ball. This kid is a elite athlete who will be recognized in the future by signing with a school of his choice.
Ty Williams, DB-ty Williams is a very good athlete with great foot work and ball positioning. Ty has great breaks coming back to the ball on any word or pass that comes his way. Ty also shows a lot of strength use of his legs when jumping up for a ball to cause a pass deflection or even an interception.
Zy Owens, DL-Owens has great work ethic and athletic ability that shows on every play. Owens is a tough defensive lineman that has the strength and leverage over any other lineman. He comes off the ball with speed and great arm and hand strength. He also has the ability to shed blockers all by himself, allowing him to make big plays in the backfield.
