The FBU National Championship tournament celebrates and promotes youth football through uniting all-star athletes of all backgrounds from across the United States in a true, one-of-a-kind national tournament. The only national football tournament of its kind, the annual FBU National Championship crowns a national champion from brackets in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th.
On October 3rd, there was a big turn out for the GMSAA team tryout at Walton High School. Athletes across all three grade levels came out and impressed–with dozens that could easily be featured below. The kids went through a 40-yard dash, cone drills, and much more to show off their talents. There are plenty of young players in Middle School who stepped up and had a big day. This group of 6th grade athletes, the class of 2028, have a lot to live up to–as GMSAA captured its first ever National Championship on the 6th grade level. The championship pedigree has been set.
Gavin Hammett | 6th Grade – Class of 2028 | Wide Receiver
One of more physically imposing kids at the tryout, Hammett was a big 6th grader who can play multiple positions right now, and at the next level. The 6-foot-0 150-pounder isn’t big, but he’s taller than most of the kids there. He caught the ball well in WR drills and could turn around and play DB too. He wasn’t going to be stopped dimply due to his size and athleticism. He’s a future Hillgrove Hawk to know about in a few years.
Isaiah Nalls | 6th Grade – Class of 2028 | Athlete
Coaches made sure to tell Prep Redzone Next all about Nalls before the tryout got started. An incredibly impressive 6th grader, he’s a dynamic runner and threat out of the backfield. He has good size for his age, but his natural running style and athleticism in drills stood out early. He plays on a different level than everyone else and always finds a way to make plays. The 5-foot-5 120-pound RB/QB has a bright future wherever he plays at the high school level.
Cooper Melvin | 6th Grade – Class of 2028 | Athlete
Melvin is a well put together prospect who excels on both sides of the ball, at multiple position. He’s a Swiss army knife personified, but looks like he should thrive at linebacker for this team. He’s a strong kid with excellent ball skills and always seems to find himself in the right position to make a big play. Simply put, he’s a football player and this GMSAA 6th grade team is much better with him on it.
Noah Cagle | 6th Grade – Class of 2028 | Defensive Line
Cagle, a regular season teammate of Melvin, is an athletic lineman who can and will line up anywhere he’s needed to. He has the length and quickness to play defensive end but also has the size and thickness needed to play down as an interior guy. Another thing that was quite evident was his smarts as a football player. People underestimate how difficult it is for a defensive lineman to react when getting set up for a screen or a pull block–Cagle understands these concepts way earlier than most.
Kaiden Kent Kaiden Kent 5'7" | 130 lbs | DB Cartersville | 2028 GA | 6th Grade – Class of 2028 | Defensive Back
An absolutely fearless corner, Kent is a flat out gamer. Though he’s only in 6th grade, he currently plays on his middle school’s 8th grade team–and thrives. Despite his lack of size playing against older athletes, he shows he has the ability to be a lockdown corner. However, what’s most impressive about Kent is his willingness to come down and support in run defense. Do not be shocked if he causes a fumble on at least one sweep to his side of the field.
Trace Hawkins | 6th Grade – Class of 2028 | Quarterback
Like Kent above him, Hawkins is a starter on his Calhoun 8th grade middle school team, as a 6th grader. He’s a smooth baller who can make plays with both his arms and his legs. Also one of 2028’s most talented basketball players, his will to win is one of most impressive things about him. Look for him to simply get the job done by any means necessary.
CJ Cypher | 6th Grade – Class of 2028 | Quarterback
In the world of football prospects, everybody wants to know “who’s next?”. The answer to that question is undoubtedly CJ Cypher. I have not seen a more polished 6th grade quarterback since watching Trevor Lawrence play. The footwork in his drops, his decision making, his throwing motion–literally everything is buttoned up like nobody else in the country. I fully Cypher to the next Georgia 8th grade quarterback, when he gets there, to have multiple offers before he’s in high school. He’s that good.
Imri Dunson | 6th Grade – Class of 2028 | Offensive Line
The young Roswell offensive lineman was easy to notice the second he arrived and was being raved about by local coaches before the tryouts got going. He’s large for his size and has been dominating the league he’s currently in. He gets his opponent on the ground with ease and already brings a toughness and physical presence. Even as a 6th grader, Dunson is a kid that has a ton of potential. He’s got the size and could turn into a major prospect as he continues to grow and develop. Right now, he’s a dominant force.
