FBU National Championship: SW Florida 7th Grade Headliners
Programs around the nation are gearing up for the FBU National Championship tournament and holding tryouts to find the best athletes in their area to compete. The FBU National Championship tournament celebrates and promotes youth football through uniting all-star athletes of all backgrounds from across the United States in a true, one-of-a-kind national tournament. The only national football tournament of its kind, the annual FBU National Championship crowns a national champion from brackets in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th.
Picturesque Naples, in Southwest Florida, is home to the Paradise Coast Sports Complex where the FBU National Championship will take place. It’s also home to team Southwest Florida who is certainly starting to evolve as a program on the rise in the tournament, as last year they saw both their 6th graders (class of 2027) and 8th graders (class of 2025) advance to championship week for the first time. Let’s take a look at a few of those 2027 athletes, hoping to return to the promise land this year.
Derrick Baker | 7th Grade – Class of 2027 | Athlete
True dual-threat who could project to multiple positions in the future, including RB, LB, and/or QB. Solid build that shows good strength, Baker is an impressive athlete who can torch defenses if he gets to the edge as a ball-carrier. The Cypress Hornets athlete has great lateral agility and quickness and a hard-nosed attitude help to set the tone for a defense as a LB as well. Coaches noted his knowledge for the game and propensity to make a big hit. Named All-FBU Top Gun player in 2021.
Jack Nylon | 7th Grade – Class of 2027 | Offensive Line/Defensive Line
For a big boy, Nylon moves well laterally, has a strong powerful build that will continue to add weight and muscle. The Venice Viking two-way lineman showed good hands and quick feet, as well as the tenacity to play DL at a high level. FBU personnel noted his coachability and attitude as well.
Bruce Blanden | 7th Grade – Class of 2027 | Running Back/Linebacker
Blanden, who plays for the Port Charlotte Bandits, could be the most important piece to the puzzle for this squad. The versatile prospect who could play RB, QB, and LB and play them all well. Solid combination of speed and strength who plays physically and aggressively for his age. Solid quickness and speed to boot. Coached raved about his high football IQ and leadership ability.
