Old rivals produce new excitement-
Carl Albert and Bishop McGuinness have met numerous times over the last several seasons. Whether it’s the regular season or competing for state titles, this matchup has become one of the most exciting rivalries in the state. Since 2016 the Titans have won 4 state titles over the Irish. The game has produced exciting finishes with exciting players, and Friday nights matchup would prove more of the same. Carl Albert came out with a strong start behind big plays from the legs of RB Buddy Bizzell Buddy Bizzell 6'1" | RB Carl Albert | 2022 State OK and freshman WR Trey Washington. The titans led 14-6 over the Irish after the 1st quarter holding Bishop McGuinness to only one score from River Warren to Mike Taffe Mike Taffe 6'0" | 190 lbs | RB Bishop McGuinness | 2023 State OK . The PAT from the Irish was missed which proved to be a foreshadowing event for the ending of the game.
Taffe would again find the end zone for the Irish midway through the 2nd quarter on a 17-yard rush that would bring the game to 14-12 in favor of the Titans. Taffe again scored for his 3rd TD of the night on a 1-yard rush and with a successful 2-point conversation the Irish would take a 20-14 lead over Carl Albert into the half.
Carl Albert would come out of halftime and chew up half of the clock in the 3rd quarter with their opening drive, capping it off with a 2-yard wildcat rush from Bizzell to give the Titans a 21-20 lead. The fourth quarter would begin with the Titans in possession of the ball, still leading by one over the Irish. On a 4th and 15 Carl Albert quarterback Reed DeQuaise throws a 28-yard TD to Quincy Hopkins to give the Titans a 28-20 lead to begin the fourth quarter. River Warren would throw a TD to Paul Tarman for the Irish late in the 4th to set up a 2-point try for Bishop McGuinness to tie the game. On the 2-point attempt Warren fumbled into the end zone but with the luck of the Irish it was recovered by McGuinness for a successful conversation and would send the game into overtime. The Irish would again depend on Taffe to score on the first possession of OT which he did from 5-yards out. The Titans however would block the extra point kick and hold the Irish to six points and give the ball to their offense with a chance to win the game. Carl Alberts Reed DeQuaise would score from 10-yards out, and the Titans would hit the extra point attempt to win a walk off against the Irish in another exciting chapter to this in state rivalry.
