We have gotten nominations from high school coaches and watched plenty of film ourselves to determine our Big Dogs of the Week for Week 7, as we lock in our Part I edition. This will certainly not be our last part either, as the amount of nominations in this week is at a high level. Thank you to all the coaches that nominated these young men. Have a player you want to nominate? Email Nate@prepredzone.com or DM us on Twitter (@PrepRedzoneDAK) Here we go, eight more big dogs of the week! Enjoy.
Tyree Nave
Tyree
Nave
6'1" | 175 lbs | ATH
SF Roosevelt | 2022
State
| RB | Sioux Falls Roosevelt (SD) | 2022
Stat Line: Four touchdowns over arch-rival Sioux Falls Jefferson.
Nave erupted for four touchdowns on the ground against their westside arch-rival, Sioux Falls Jefferson. One thing I have always enjoyed about Tyree’s running ability is his big strides. Standing at 6’1, he gets more yards per stride than some other smaller backs I have seen in South Dakota 11-man football. He showed good patience against the Cavaliers as his top-of-the-line OL in Joseph Cotton Joseph Cotton 6'6" | 300 lbs | OL SF Roosevelt | 2022 State , Nick Bunkers Nick Bunkers 6'1" | 280 lbs | OL SF Roosevelt | 2022 State , and more, went to work and paved him some huge gaps to run thru. Nave also had strong fluidity in his footwork, as he looks comfortable turning his hips left and right at a strong level. He also logged a herd of yards after contact going up against some of his former teammates. More programs in the Northern Sun need to take a better look at this young man, as he only holds one out-of-state offer in the Sun.
Amari Gilmore | RB/DT | Beulah (ND) | 2022
Stat Line: 26 carries, 176 rushing yards, two touchdowns.
The highlight tape vs. Shiloh Christian hasn’t hit Hudl publicly yet for Gilmore but we found plenty of other film to evaluate this young man. When watching some 2020 film on Gilmore, we saw just how tough it was to bring down this 5’11 225 pound tailback. He does a solid job of working on the inside lanes within a small window to run thru. He has the ability to fly thru that small gap and get to the outside. He will need to develop stronger stamina and burst on those outside lanes, but I would hate to be a player on that second level of the field that has to meet Gilmore to make a last chance tackle before he hits the end zone. He might even give off a little of “The Bus” Jerome Bettis when it comes to one of the strong framed tailbacks in North Dakota’s Class of 2022.
Cedar Amiotte Cedar Amiotte ATH Wall | 2023 State | RB/LB | Wall (SD) | 2023
Stat Line: 123 all-purpose yards (90 rush, 33 receiving). 22.5 yards per carry, 33 yards per reception, two touchdowns. Defense: 5 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss.
Cedar shows in all of his game tapes some great loose hips when making his turns. This young man brings versatility for the Eagles, as a pass catcher in the slot and their tailback. Those loose hips I mentioned? They apply to both sides of the field as Amiotte can turn well defensively as well. To add to that, his contact level on the ball carrier is another great skill set he has. I believe Cedar has college football in his future as a small-school prospect.
Kelby Azure Kelby Azure 6'4" | 230 lbs | DL Northwood | 2022 State | DL/OL | Hatton-Northwood (ND) | 2022
Stat Line: 24 tackles (school record)
I will probably use adjectives I have used in the past to describe Azure’s game, so I’ll keep it to the point. His aggressive contact level is one of the hardest I have seen scouting the Dakotas in nearly a year since we launched. The multitude of ways the Thunder utilize this young man that has a well-put-together 6’4 230-pound frame has to make teams game-planning for Azure a nightmare because his skillset across the board is so versatile. North Dakota State adds a great player that I think will excel on the defensive line for the Bison and one that has Grade-A character.
Will Matson | QB | Oldham-Romana-Rutland (SD) | 2022
Stat Line: 11 of 15, 263 total yards (215 pass, 48 rush), six total touchdowns (5 pass, 1 rush), also converted 2 two-point conversions. Accounted for 41 of the Raiders 57 points (72%).
Matson had a field day in the Raiders 57-8 win over Colman-Egan. This young man runs with a chip on his shoulder, as the first play on his game tape shows a wicked stiff arm and tosses the defender into the grass. It gets better from there, Matson also showed off some nice touch on the football on his deeper routes. The way he throws out of the pocket reminds me of a game of pass & catch in the backyard as he markets his receivers well to go make a play on the ball but shows good precision with it. He also excels in RPOs, selling the ball in his hands, when it wasn’t in his hands. Fun young man to watch for the 3-3 Oldham-Ramona-Rutland Raiders.
Brysen Cleem | QB | Cavalier (ND) | 2022
Stat Line: 219 all-purpose yards, three touchdowns. Defense: 5 tackles, 1 fumble recovery.
Cleem is no stranger to our Big Dogs of the Week list, as he is now a second-timer after another strong performance against #2 ranked Mayport-CG. Some of Brysen’s best stuff is on intermediate routes of 10 yards+ as he shows his best touch on those throws. I believe he can develop some better touch on his routes out the backfield. There is a lot to like about his mobility outside of the pocket and he shows good zip on the football when throwing from the run. Also an exceptional defensive player for the Cavaliers.
Ethan Hoffman Ethan Hoffman 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Flandreau | 2023 State | RB/LB | Flandreau (SD) | 2023
Stat Line: 133 all-purpose yards, three touchdowns (2 rush, 1 receiving). Defense: 6 tackles, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery.
Hoffman is another nominated two-timer from the Flandreau Fliers. Hoffman is a running back from my eyes that runs harder and more durable than his measurables (5’10 160) might read. As a north-south runner, I really like the endurance Ethan runs with for the duration of his run as he stays level with his speed production from start to finish. I would one the developments Hoffman can work on is his hip turn. He slightly overstrides when turning his hips, and with I believe more reps this season and offseason he can have a breakout senior season with that adjustment. He shows a strong motor to make plays in the backfield & hightops the football on interceptions at a good vertical. I think if he can develop in the weight room, it will also help his tackling ability on the first level of the field. Could Hoffman hit the trifecta this season for this list? He and the Fliers face a tough to close out the regular season with Sioux Valley (5-1) coming to town and traveling on the road to McCook Central-Montrose (4-2).
Ryan Doll Ryan Doll 6'0" | 200 lbs | DL Brandon Valley | 2022 State | MLB | Brandon Valley (SD) | 2022
Stat Line: 3 sacks.
Doll was not on our big dog’s list last week but was mentioned with teammate Christian Jepperson in his stellar performance for the Lynx. The film hasn’t come in for 2021 yet, but here is my scoop on Brandon Valley’s Ryan Doll Ryan Doll 6'0" | 200 lbs | DL Brandon Valley | 2022 State . Doll is a flyer to the football, to say the least. He has a fantastic motor that plays with a high rate of speed. I’m looking forward to this game tape when it comes out. Doll’s motor helps him out with getting leverage off the O-Line and he adds terrific vision when getting to the football. Really surprised this young man does not have an offer yet. College coaches, there is still plenty of time to inquire!
