Scouting Report: Groce is a versatile athlete who stars on both sides of the ball. One the defensive side he lines up as a cornerback and is solid in coverage and isn’t afraid to come up and fill or make a hit when the ball carrier is coming his way. On the offensive side he lines up both inside and outside and is a key playmaker for the Pikesville Wildcats.
Quote: “I try to model my game after Jaycee Horn, Jalen Ramsey, Marlon Humphrey and Patrick Surtain, Jr.,” says Groce. “I feel I’m good in man-to-man coverage and have good eye discipline when reading the opposing offense.
“I’m excited and honored to be chosen to play in the Under Armor Futures Game. I can’t wait to showcase my abilities and prove I’m one of the best in the country.”
Family Connections: Groce’s father, Trenton Hughes, was a three-year starter at Maryland before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2012.
Looking Ahead: Groce is hoping to continue his football career in high school at either St. Francis Academy, Calvert Hall or Franklin High School where he hopes to be a team leader and help lead his team to multiple state championships.
Advice: “I would tell younger athletes to give more than the effort required because someone else is always trying to outwork you. Also, to be open to all positions because you never know how good you can be at one unless you try.”
