Every Tuesday, we take a look at the top ten match-up’s across Oklahoma. It’s week seven and we’re now in the second half of the 2021 regular season. This week’s games are headlined by a huge showdown in Class 5A and yet another state championship rematch! Plus many more games all across Oklahoma highlight what should be an exciting week six! And with schools having Fall Break this week, the majority of games will be on Thursday this week. Unless otherwise noted, all of the games in this breakdown will be on Thursday.
1) #1 McALESTER (6-0) AT #4 COWETA (6-0)
This one has been on the calendar for a while now. Coweta and McAlester will have a showdown for the lead in the district and the winner will solidify themselves as a championship favorite. The other will have to bounce back and rally just to get a home playoff game. Both teams have been simply dominant all season. Coweta hasn’t had a close game since their road test against Bishop McGuinness in week zero. McAlester’s closest game was a 19-0 win over Bishop Kelley on the road. The Buffaloes came into this season as the preseason number one team and have backed it up so far but this is without a doubt their toughest test to date. For Coweta, they were tested a few times early on but will now need to crank it back up for this top five showdown. Both of these teams expect to be in Edmond when December rolls around.
2) #1 HOLLAND HALL (6-0) AT #5 BERRYHILL (5-1)
This game became much more interesting following week five when Berryhill knocked off Verdigris and looked impressive doing so. This district was loaded from the start of the season as three of the top six teams were all in the same district. Now, Berryhill looks to take down another highly ranked team as defending champion Holland Hall comes to town. Just like last year, the Dutch have been flat out dominant this season. They haven’t been in a close game yet and maybe Thursday will be their first test. However, it appears that the Dutch are once again on a one-way track to Wantland Stadium and nobody in Class 3A can stop that train. Berryhill has looked great since losing to Cushing earlier in the season and the Chiefs are once again one of the top teams in 3A. But Thursday night will be their toughest test of the year.
3) #2 LINCOLN CHRISTIAN (7-0) AT #7 SEMINOLE (6-0)
It’s pretty rare at this point of the year but for the second straight week, Lincoln Christian will face an unbeaten team when they travel to face Seminole in week seven. Lincoln has been one of the top teams in Class 3A throughout the year and have just been dominating teams with one of the best offensive units in the state, regardless of class. On the other side of the match-up, you have a Seminole team that came into this season expecting to be in this position. They were an experienced bunch coming into the year and have been perfect so far. However, Seminole has not faced a team like Lincoln Christian yet this year. And in their last two games, Seminole won by a combined 11 points. Lincoln Christian hasn’t had a close game since week one on the road against Jones. The winner here is in the driver’s seat for the district crown.
4) #7 LAWTON MACARTHUR (6-0) AT #9 NOBLE (5-1) (Fri.)
Let’s find out just how good this Lawton MacArthur team is. The Highlanders haven’t been considered among the elite teams in Class 5A in a few years but that might change this season. The first test comes on Friday night when they travel north to face a very talented Noble squad. The Bears are once again in the mix and have looked really good since losing in non-district play to Midwest City in a close one. Nearly every game that the Highlanders have played in have been decided by multiple touchdowns. However, Friday night is their biggest test to date. The favorite in this district is Ardmore right now and the winner here will still have their district title hopes alive while the loser is going to have plenty of work to do to just get a home playoff game. The Bears are looking to hand MacArthur their first loss of the season.
5) #1 JENKS (5-1) AT #4 EDMOND SANTA FE (4-2)
It’s a rematch of last year’s 6A-1 state championship game as Edmond Santa Fe will host defending champion Jenks. The Trojans and Wolves didn’t meet in the regular season a year ago because of a Covid cancellation. Because of that, Edmond Santa Fe played one more district game than Jenks and would capture the district crown for the second straight season. Both teams have reasons to have this date circled on their calendar. Edmond Santa Fe wants revenge after losing in the state title game. Jenks wants to take back the district crown from the Wolves. Santa Fe has won four in a row after starting off the season 0-2. Jenks has looked dominant throughout the season with the exception of a loss to Bixby. With a win for Jenks, they’ll be the heavy favorite to capture the district crown while Santa Fe will still have some work to do with a win.
6) #4 SAND SPRINGS (5-1) AT #1 BIXBY (6-0)
Both teams come off massive games in week six with another top five showdown on Thursday night. For top ranked Bixby, they had no problems extending their winning streak to 42 in a row with a 70-7 blowout of Choctaw. Now, the Sandites take aim at knocking off the three-time defending champs and grabbing headlines all across the state. Sand Springs is in the middle of a three-week gauntlet that includes games against the top three teams in 6A-2. Last week, they fell at home to Booker T Washington. This week, they’re on the road against Bixby and next week they face off with Choctaw. The Spartans were perfect last week in the win over the Yellowjackets and appeared to have no weaknesses. But Sandite head coach Bobby Klinck has this Sand Springs program headed in the right direction and they won’t be afraid on Thursday.
7) #8 PRAGUE (6-0) AT #9 CROSSINGS CHRISTIAN (4-2)
Prague is one of a handful of undefeated teams left in a loaded and competitive Class 2A. They take their undefeated record and go on the road to take on a red-hot Crossings Christian squad. This district might be one of the more unpredictable districts in the state, regardless of class. Prague got everyone’s attention when they absolutely dominated Millwood in the district opener. Then Crossings Christian put everyone on notice last week when they stunned Jones. So who knows what’s going to happen every week in this district but one thing is for sure, it’s going to be incredibly entertaining to watch. Five teams are either unbeaten in district play or just have one loss. The race for the four playoff spots is going to come down to the final week of the regular season. But this game on Thursday will certainly have an impact on that race.
8) #7 DEER CREEK (5-1) AT #8 MIDWEST CITY (4-2)
Despite that double overtime loss to Stillwater, Deer Creek’s district championship hopes are still alive with this week’s game against Midwest City and a meeting with Del City coming up later this season. The Antlers have been one of the biggest surprises in 6A-D2 this season and are a talented team capable of making a run. How far of a run? Well, we might get an answer to that as they go on the road to face a Midwest City team that is looking to bounce back after last week. The Bombers were absolutely dominated from start to finish by rival Del City and the Bombers need to avoid another district loss in what has become a very entertaining district playoff race. The battle for the four playoff spots is going to be incredibly entertaining down the stretch and both of these teams have a good shot to make it into the postseason.
9) #9 KINGFISHER (5-1) AT PERKINS-TRYON (4-2)
Perkins-Tryon is one of the top teams in Class 3A that is currently outside of the top ten. This is a dangerous team, who’s only losses are to 4A’s #2 Cushing and #3 Heritage Hall. And in the district match-up against Heritage Hall, Perkins-Tryon had the Chargers on ropes for a couple quarters. Kingfisher will attempt to hand the Demons a loss and keep their district championship hopes alive. The Yellowjackets fell to Weatherford in week one and haven’t lost since. They were tested by Douglass earlier this month but were able to get out of that with a win. Perkins-Tryon is looking to knock the Yellowjackets out of the top ten and take that spot for themselves. The loser of this game will more than likely have to hit the road for the first round of the playoffs. Plenty is on the line when these two teams square off on Thursday night.
10) #3 METRO CHRISTIAN (4-2) AT VICTORY CHRISTIAN (4-2)
It’s bounce back time for the two-time defending champions. Metro Christian lost to Beggs at home in a last minute thriller. They can’t afford to lose another district game or they will more than likely have to go on the road in the first round of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Victory Christian, who started 1-2 against a brutal non-district schedule have rattled off three straight wins and have been at their best against the toughest competition. They upset Pawhuska and then played Verdigris incredibly close. The Conquerors are certainly a dark horse in the 2A race but do they have enough to knock off a Metro Christian team that is still one of the best in 2A? If Victory was to win on Thursday night, they’ll still have a shot at capturing the district championship. Both offenses can light up a scoreboard so we could see a shootout.
