Continue ReadingClover came up with three first half turnovers in a dominant defensive effort, which helped them defeat Fort Mill in a 44-7 rout on Friday night.
Let’s get into the notes and standouts from the contest:
Clover
- Senior WR Darius Bowser Darius Bowser 6'1" | 195 lbs | WR Clover | 2022 State SC (@BowserDarius) – Bowser continues to prove himself as one of the top receivers in the area as he can take the top off the defense. He had one completion on a post throw where he stacked the DB for a chunk play. Bowser’s one touchdown of the night came off a double pass where he was wide open.
- Senior DL Jacob Neelands (@JacobNeelands) – Neelands has great size at his position and can run and get after the quarterback, as we saw tonight. He had a QB pressure which prompted an intentional grounding penalty in the first quarter. The Fort Mill offensive line didn’t have an answer for him as he used violent hands to get after them.
- Junior QB Joe Boyd Joe Boyd 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Clover | 2023 State SC (@JoeBoyd123) – Boyd showed the ability to get out of the pocket and make plays on the run. He had great velocity on the throws and helped lead the offense on scoring drives. The junior can also make plays on the ground on designed keepers if need be.
- Junior LB Cooper Zohner (@cooperzohner) – Zohner made his presence known from the first defensive snap of the night with a tackle for loss in the backfield. He continued his strong play throughout the night as he took great angles to the ball and tripped up the ball carriers at times.
Where the game changed: Clover led 14-7 in the second quarter but the game swung open with 14 points in six seconds. The first came from a pick six from LB Zaske Her (@Zaske0441344) and the other came from a strip sack fumble recovery in the end zone from DE Zach Jordan as the lead was increased to 28-7. The Blue Eagle defense forced 4 turnovers on the night.
“We practice that. We practice turnovers, we have turnover drills. We have (a) turnover circuit. We try to create turnovers and defensively man, they did a heck of a job tonight. (We) had a great punt there at the end to pin them and we got the safety there at the end (of the game)” – Clover head coach Brian Lane on the turnovers
Fort Mill
- Senior DE Miller Shouse Miller Shouse 6'1" | 235 lbs | DL Fort Mill | 2022 State SC (@ShouseMiller) – Miller continues to be an active part of the Yellow Jacket defense as he was involved in several tackles in the run game. Shouse was a frequent presence in the backfield, applying pressure on the quarterback even after the ball was released.
- Senior WR/CB J.J. Ogwal (@jj_ogwal) – Ogwal was a bright spot at the outside receiver position as he was consistent in his route running and catching. There was one play in the fourth quarter, with his team trailing big where he was patient in waiting for a block. He nearly had an interception earlier in the contest.
- RB Michael Threatt (@MichaelThreatt6) ran hard throughout the night and while the yards were tough to come by, Threatt kept low pad level and continues to show he can get three to four yards a carry. He had the Yellow Jackets’ lone touchdown on the night.
Additional notes and observations
- Clover WR/DB Chance Sanders (@Chance_Sanders3) took a quick pass and showed off his speed down the left sideline for a touchdown to extend the Blue Eagles lead to 35-7, two plays into the second half.
- Fort Mill DE Henry Debbout recovered a fumble in the third quarter, showing the effort even though the game was well in hand.
