6A Semifinals Defensive Sleepers
The 6A class presented prospects with grit, tenacity, and passion for the game. These guys showed a willingness to win and an underdog mentality when making crucial plays on the field for their respective teams. Below is a list of playmakers that performed at a high level during the semifinals.
Octavious Gay LB Opelika 2022
Gay showed tenacity and toughness in Opelika’s matchup against Hueytown. He used his solid frame to engage with blockers and maintained leverage to shred them off. In addition, he didn’t take false steps and maintained solid gap integrity when playing the run. In addition to his physicality, Gay showed off some impressive wheels while helping out on perimeter plays and containing the outside portion of the field.

Devin Finely DE Chalkville 2022
Finely is a 3-4 Defensive end who has next-level size and fundamentals. He’s a jack of all trades, has sufficient speed and strength, and wins with IQ and fundamentals. He does an excellent job of setting the edge and containing the outside zones. He is also sound when breaking down and making tackles in the backfield.
Jones Beavers FS Mountain Brook 2022
Beavers is a safety whose high IQ and technique is next level. Beavers’ primary skill is his ability to diagnose plays pre snap. He does an excellent job of analyzing motion, route combinations and putting himself in a position to make plays. He is also an enforcer in the run game and is very physical when supplying run support. He reads the QBs eyes well in the zone and has good breaking speed to make plays on the ball.
Maurice Davis CB Saraland 2022
Davis is a corner who specializes in man-to-man coverage. His quick feet and reaction time allow him to stay with the receiver after the release. He is very fluid in the hips and shows good technique in transitioning from his backpedal to getting in phase. Davis does an excellent job of staying on the receiver’s hip and cutting of space to force the opposing QB to make the perfect throw. In addition, he knows how to get his head around and make plays on the ball.

Nick Covington SS Opelika 2022
Covington is an old-school strong safety which supports the run with physicality and persistence. He has elite size and solid speed to be an impact player at the next level. Covington covers ground fast and plays with a linebacker’s mentality when going up against ball carriers in the open field. He plays hard, hits hard, and only knows one speed. He also isn’t afraid to mix it up with blockers and shows relentless pursuit when coming down in the box.
