Coming off the heels of a memorable matchup between Michigan and Michigan State last weekend, it’s only apropos that we take a look at just some of the most promising prospects in "The Great Lakes State". While Michigan is certainly loaded with athletes that will excel when they get to high school, here’s a look at five that I expect to be getting some college recruiting attention early in their careers.
Tristan Comer | Defensive Line/Offensive Line
One look at Comer and you know you’re dealing with a future big time athlete when he gets to high school. Already standing 6-foot-7 and 215 pounds, what Comer is doing athletically in both football and basketball is jaw dropping. The big man helped lead the Freeland Falcons to an undefeated season this in dominating fashion. Unlike most tall middle school athletes, Comer also has muscle mass and strength along with his size. Defensively he uses his length to his advantage and doesn’t allow anybody into his chest. As an offensive tackle, he has an ingrained mean streak that sees him excel in run blocking, as he repeatedly puts his man in the turf. With that said, it would not shock me at all to see him moved to tight end because of his elite feet.
[player_tooltip player_id="212357" first="Benjamin" last="Eziuka"] | Offensive Line/Defensive Line
At 6-foot-3 and 270 pounds Eziuka has a high school-ready football body already, despite being a year away. Playing for the Southfield Falcons, he has a lot of talent around him including Under Armour All-American [player_tooltip player_id="212355" first="Aj" last="Marks"] and others on this list. In terms of Eziuka, he is a thickly built player with a powerful lower half. Defensively that build gives him an impressive bull rush and he easily pushes the pocket and causes disruption. On the offensive line, he excelled at right tackle this year but will need to improve foot speed to stay there throughout his high school career. Regardless, he’s a powerful run blocker that creates a lot of space for his backs and a lot of time for his quarterback.
[player_tooltip player_id="212356" first="Ben" last="Nichols"] | Defensive Line/Offensive Line
Watching the film on Nichols, what he’s doing to his peers on a football is utterly terrifying. He’s so big and strong that he’s literally throwing opposing players 3-to-5 yards backwards, in the air. At 6-foot-5 and 295 pounds he’s virtually unblockable along the defensive front. While typically athletes at this level excel because of their size alone, it is clear that Nichols is a complete football player with technique, above average feet and advanced overall athleticism. Another plus is his versatility to play either defensive end or tackle depending on scheme and need. If he can stay the course, he’ll be a fun one to watch over his high school career.
[player_tooltip player_id="212359" first="Isaiah" last="Harris"] | Athlete
Harris is an intriguing prospect because he can play all over the field and it’ll be interesting to see where he ends up on the high school level. Standing 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, he played wide receiver and linebacker for his school team—the Saline Hornets but played tight end and defensive end for his rec team—the Southfield Falcons. Whatever team he was suiting up for during his 8th grade season, he was productive, scoring 23 touchdowns in just six games. On either side of the ball he was a matchup nightmare for the opposition because of his speed and power. Offensively he was too fast for linebackers and too physical for corners to lock down. Defensively he recognized plays very quickly and took no time attacking.
Allen Saidov | Linebacker
The third member of the Southfield Falcons highlighted in this article, I did not know about Saidov until I was watching film on some of his teammates—but color me impressed. The 6-foot, 150-pound linebacker has freaky length and moves around the field with amazing fluidity, almost like a strong safety. He plays wide receiver on the other side of the ball and it is evident with his hands and knack for making plays on the ball on defense. He shows the athleticism necessary to play all over the field, including out in space. I think his future is at an outside linebacker because of his ability to pass drop but also come up and stick ball carriers on outside runs.
