The leading tackler for the Blue Jays defense goes went to linebacker Devin Beach, who is a Prep Redzone ranked prospect. Beach showed a solid amount of range when getting to his tackles during last Friday’s game and this young man has a big punch to go along with it. Even as an outside linebacker, do not expect Beach to stay in that one spot as he was all over the football field against Jamestown as the senior leader led the Blue Jays to their first state championship since 1937.
Nick Schumacher | QB | Bismarck St Mary’s | 2022
Schumacher played at a high level despite playing in his final game with an injury. He made some key throws that only his wide receivers could get and made other throws that were thrown in higher coverage areas that he just found enough to slide them into. After throwing for nearly 270 yards and two touchdowns, the Saints will have to turn to a new QB1 in 2022, one that doesn’t not have the strong resume as of yet that Schumacher brought to the Saints program for multiple years. I wish I could gotten to get more film on this young man throughout his career!
Adam Kallenbach | WR/DB | Jamestown | 2022
Kallenbach was a two-sided stud in the 11A state championship game. It was fun to watch him turn on his routes in person, as I have watched a handful of film on this young man this year at both wide receiver and defensive back. He provides on on both sides of the ball, really good length and it’s easy to see why Northern Sun programs are taking a chance on this kid in his senior season. He has a good vertical and a solid catch radius to go along with it. Adam also was stuck to the Saints wide receivers like glue from watch I watched last Friday night. This young man goes out a state championship and likely will be playing scholarship-level college football next season at the Division II level.
Jakob Schempp | RB | Jamestown | 2022
Talk about a freaking workhorse in the backfield. Schempp logged nearly 30 carries and over 150 rushing yards on his two touchdowns on the day. There’s not much available tape on Jakob, but what do you do see is his explosiveness out the gates which is something he showed at a high level in the 11A state championship game. He also for a undersize tailback looked really solid running the ball on the inside between the tackles, which is something smaller backs usually struggle with but not Jakob. I certainly will hand Schempp my offensive MVP from the game, as he put all 5’7 140 pounds to work against the Saints and his strong work ethic gave the Blue Jays their first state championship since before World War II.
Brit Senftner Brit Senftner 6'3" | 190 lbs | LB Bismarck St. Marys | 2022 State | DB/WR | Bismarck St. Mary’s | 2022
The newest North Dakota State Bison commit, was a prospect I was zoomed in on all-day no matter where he lined up on the football field. Ever since watching him at the SDSU prospect camp over the summer I have become a huge fan of this young man’s game. Brit can be defined as a gamer, as at defensive back he reads the field really nicely and can crash into that first level and help out his linebackers. You could certainly read his high football IQ from the stands as he’s such a right play, right time type of prospect. He also showed those same great instincts at wide receiver last Friday, as regardless of what the scoreboard read he continued to run solid routes and attack the areas of the secondary where he knew he could get his hands on the football and make a catch. I’m not sure watch the Bison’s plan is for this young man in his future, but it’s hard not to watch him as a hard-hitting safety in the Missouri that has elite size too at 6’3 200 pounds that has great speed to connect on any play. We made the call the before the season started this Senftner would be the 11A Player of the Year at the start of the season, and guess what? He lived up to that hype being crowned 11A Player of the Year at the awards ceremony. The Bison are getting a steal of a preferred walk-on in Senftner, and I can’t wait to watch him at the Division I level.
Colton Mewes | LB/TE | Jamestown | 2023
Mewes can be thanked for the lack of success the Saints had in the backfield for the duration of the game as he was found as a ballhawk beyond the line of scrimmage for the Blue Jays. He does a solid job shifting his feet in pursuit at an angle where the offensive line can’t read where or how quick he’s coming in to attack the ball. Mewes has one more left as a Blue Jay as has a really effective motor that can cover some range as a linebacker and with more tape, could be a solid college prospect in 2023.
Jaxyn Richter | LB/FB | Bismarck St. Mary’s | 2023
Richter is another untapped linebacker prospect that made our Big Dogs of the Week list from the 11A championship game. The good news? The Saints will go marching into 2022 with their top tackler from the 11A championship game back for a senior season. Richter played with a chip on his shoulder being the top solo tackler between both defenses. Richter’s performance came as a slight shock in my eyes, as he was not in the top five in tacklers for the Saints during the 2021 season, so the Saints have a junior ready to rock in roll in 2022.
Jackson Walters | LB/TE | Jamestown | 2023
All season long, Walters had three tackles for a loss and in the championship alone, got half of that in the backfield of the Bismarck St Mary’s Saints. Walter’s ability to continue his strong play as one of the Blue Jays most experienced tacklers, showed off at a high level of linebacker along with teammate Colton Mewes who between the two off the stuffed the Saints in the backfield for three tackles for a loss which is a solid number from two players that have to use their motor even stronger to get into the backfield compared to the defensive line. Head Coach Bill Nelson has to be really excited to get one more year out of these boys and we are hopeful, we can get some game tape on Jackson Walters real soon.
Payton Hochhalter Payton Hochhalter 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Jamestown | 2023 State | QB | Jamestown | 2023
Hochhalter was a prospect I learned about several weeks back now when he was a Big Dog of the Week of ours, so I was really intrigued to watch his performance last Friday afternoon. He lived up to that hype I saw on film, showing good poise inside the pocket with a fire-pop calm demeanor to just hit his spots with the right throw and the right ball velocity too. He also showed a lot of elusiveness when the pocket closed and could extend the play with his legs and still make a calm throw to his wide receiver. With the Class of 2023 in North Dakota, I would be willing to bet that Hochhalter might be one of the best North Dakota will have in next year’s QB class. Hochhalter has arm strength, but is really persistent on making the correct throw vs. taking the riskier throw. We will have to find out how the Class of 2023 shapes out, but I like my pick from the 11A state championship game with Hochhalter at the helm for Jamestown as QB1 and maybe QB1 in North Dakota, only time will tell!
