Many of the players below gave us a preview of what playoffs may look like and if that is the case, we are all in for a treat! The players listed had fantastic showings and helped their teams in a big way bring home a victory!
RB Johann Cardenas Johann Cardenas 6'0" | 205 lbs | RB St. Thomas Catholic | 2024 State TX (2024) – St. Thomas Catholic
Cardenas showed off some true talent vs. Concordia Lutheran. He was making the right cuts and displayed very good vision. Cardenas broke off a couple of big runs where he showed his strength, breaking through wobbly tackles, and showing his open field speed on his way to the endzone. He ran physically and made good cuts we he saw green. Cardenas put his hands on display as well, catching passes out of the backfield including a 56 yard screen that he took to the house after following key blocks and making defenders miss. On the night, Cardenas had 10 carries for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns including a 63 yarder, and added 3 catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. It was a very good night for the sophomore who is definitely one to keep eyes on.
WR Kaleb Black Kaleb Black 5'10" | 160 lbs | WR Klein Oak | 2023 State TX (2023) – Klein Oak
I am not sure how it happened, but the Tomball Memorial defense somehow lost track of Black on the field and paid for it on multiple occasions. Black was a nightmare for the opposing defense and looked smooth doing it. He was turning the defensive backs in different directions on almost every route. Black hauled in 4 receptions for 192 yards with 2 touchdowns including a 63 yard catch and run. His route running on the deep routes was a beauty and he delivered on the night.
WR Noah Abboud (2023) – Cinco Ranch
Abboud was a nasty matchup in the slot for the defense. His speed and quickness was too much for the secondary, and he showed great awareness to adjust to his quarterback when needed. Abboud was too quick out of his breaks for defenders to stay with him, which is why he had 108 yards receiving with 2 touchdowns on 5 receptions.
QB Bishop Davenport (2022) – Spring
We all should have known that Davenport would find his way on this list again. The quarterback is just a special talent who controls the game and works the offense like a fine oiled machine. Davenport once again was dropping dimes to his guys and was efficient on the night. The accuracy has been on point all year and it will be exciting seeing he and this Spring team compete in the playoffs. Davenport finished the game with 297 passing yards on 20/24 throwing along with 6 touchdowns. He also ran the ball 4 times for 33 yards and a touchdown.
WR Jonah Wilson Jonah Wilson 6'3" | 200 lbs | WR Dekaney | 2023 State TX (2023) – Dekaney
Wilson impressed me with his ability to win the 50/50 ball consistently and use his size and frame correctly. He was the redzone target for the night and took advantage of it every time. He has a physical presence and can play bully ball when he wants. Wilson had 5 receptions for 90 yards and 3 big touchdown catches.
WR Andrew Marsh Andrew Marsh 6'1" | 185 lbs | WR Katy Jordan | 2025 State TX (2025) – Jordan
You want to talk about electric? Check out this young talent for the Jordan Warriors. Marsh had himself a game and it started early for him. He was a favorite target for his quarterback and made the most of his touches. First half of the game, Marsh had 2 receiving touchdowns and an incredible 90 yard kickoff return, where he looked to have made the entire Davenport coverage team miss tackles. Both Marsh and the young Jordan team have much to build on and will be a team to watch for next season.
RB Damyrion Phillips (2023) – Paetow
Phillips moves at a different speed on the field and makes everybody seem like they are in slow motion. He is just a gamechanger with the ball in his possession and makes an already talented Paetow team seemingly unfair. Phillips sees the hole and is gone. His open field speed is incredible and do not let his size fool you. Phillips has some power behind his runs and with his vision, he is one of the best players on the field. Phillips had 17 carries for 246 yards and 4 touchdowns including a quick 63 yard run to the house.
Other Notable Performances:
RB Burke Battenfield (2022) – St. Pius X
41 carries – 223 yards – 3 touchdowns
QB PJ Hatter (2023) – Klein Oak
8/18 – 243 yards – 3 touchdowns
12 carries – 145 yards – 4 touchdowns
RB Ethan Spears – (2023) – Memorial
30 carries – 188 yards – 2 touchdowns
QB Chase Jenkins Chase Jenkins 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Alief Taylor | 2023 State TX (2022) – Alief Taylor
16/23 – 180 yards – 3 touchdowns
7 carries – 172 yards – 2 touchdowns
